With the launch of the first online dating site, Match.com, back in 1995, the world of dating changed forever. Rather than meeting through a chance encounter on the subway or at a dinner with mutual friends, it has become increasingly common to find romantic partners through dating websites and apps.

Thanks to AI tools like Rizz and Your Move, more people are relying on technology to optimize online dating profiles and help with conversations.

And now, in the digital age, the dating landscape is being radically transformed thanks to a surge of new AI tools promising to change the way we date. With apps like Rizz, Keys, and Your Move, prospective suitors can delegate the difficult task of thinking of something interesting to say. Rather than relying on your own personality and charm, or asking a friend to be your wingman (or wingwoman), you can task the AI tool on your phone with devising a compelling opening line or conversation starter.

According to Your Move creator Dmitri Mirakyan, one of the reasons he built the app was because he struggled with reading social cues and interacting with others online. And he isn’t alone – many people are daunted by these aspects of online dating. AI tools like Your Move, which uses Open AI's GPT-3 language model, can help people get past the initial hurdle of opening a conversation and bring out a more confident, or perhaps playful, side to their messaging, complete with emojis and punctuation to set just the right tone.

The end of the cheesy pickup line?

  • Of course, AI tools aren’t always seamless communicators. When it comes to the natural flow of conversation, there can be a fine line between witty and nonsensical, and AI-generated responses can sometimes be clunky, impersonal, or just plain weird – though they can also be unintentionally funny.

  • Other startups are focusing on further automating online dating by using AI to optimize dating profiles and even conduct entire conversations on the user's behalf.

  • In a different use of AI for romantic purposes, the dating app DNA Romance connects a user's DNA sample to 16 different personality types, in line with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The app then attempts to predict the romantic chemistry between matches based on their DNA profiles.
