Which US State Has the Most Millionaires?

California has the most millionaires in the United States, with almost 600,000 of them, which is about 1.5 percent of the state's total population. If you count by household, though, then Hawaii tops the list with almost 7 percent of Hawaiian households considered millionaires.

More facts about millionaires:

  • Mississippi has the lowest rate of millionaires in the U.S., with only about 0.3 percent of the state's population being millionaires. The state also has one of the lowest median incomes in the U.S., with average earnings topping out at about $28,000 US Dollars (USD) a year.

  • In terms of counties, Los Angeles County has the highest number of millionaires, with more than 250,000 millionaires living in the county. It does not have the zip code with the highest income, though — that's New York's 10022, where residents list their average income as more than $250,000 USD a year.

  • Other millionaire-rich states include Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut and Virginia, each of which have about 6 percent of their households listed as millionaire households.
