A healing balm is a type of solid or semi-solid mixture used for various healing purposes. Most often, this medicinal balm is applied topically to the skin. A healing balm may be used to relieve skin irritations and other conditions such as inflammation and pain. Ingredients in a medicated balm may include analgesics.

Some people prefer using an all-natural or organic healing balm. Certified organic balms may be derived from plants. This may include ingredients such as wintergreen oil and birch. Sometimes antiseptics are used in healing balms. Many people use these to soothe minor burns and prevent infection.

Many individuals who suffer from joint stiffness or arthritis use a healing balm as a rub. Some of these balms are used for relief of minor sprains and strains. These preparations may provide warmth on contact and reduce muscle pain.

Skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis may respond well to the use of certain healing balms. This type of preparation may include natural ingredients such as essential oils. Many do not use chemicals in the solution.

Some medicated healing balms relieve dry and cracked skin or chapped lips. These balms may include ingredients such as shea butter or cocoa butter. Vitamin E and aloe are often found in a healing balm as well. All of the aforementioned ingredients are generally used to moisturize and promote healing.


Medicated balms made for infants generally incorporate gentle or natural ingredients. These may be used for relieving symptoms of diaper rash. Some parents prefer to make a homemade healing balm for treating diaper rash. Natural ingredients such as marshmallow root and comfrey root may be used, along with extra virgin olive oil. Lavender may also be added, as this oil may promote relaxation.

Bee balm is an herb that can be made into a medicinal healing mixture. The leaves and flowers from this herb may be used in making the balm. This type of healing balm may have several purposes, including as an antiseptic for minor cuts and abrasions.

Healing balms may also relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies, colds, and sinusitis. These preparations are sometimes known as congestion balms. Some are known as chest rubs. Menthol and eucalyptus are common ingredients used in these preparations. These are typically be found in plastic jars.
