What are Travertine Pavers?

Travertine pavers are types of stone pavers that are excellent for a variety of uses both indoors and outdoors. These pavers are made from travertine, a naturally occurring stone that is quite prodigious throughout the world and so can be moderately priced. Pavers are typically cut to desired sizes, though they can also be available in a number of pre-cut sizes to create walkways, surround swimming pools, and create floors for kitchens and bathrooms. Travertine pavers can be found in a variety of colors, including various shades of brown like caramel and beige, as well as gray tones.

One of the major benefits of travertine pavers is that they are natural products created over time from deposits of various minerals. This means these pavers often have natural colorations and patterns running throughout them, similar to the natural patterns found in marble or wood grain. When used outside, they do not typically require mortar or cement to set, and can be used to create a pathway through a garden, to surround a swimming pool, or to make a patio.

Travertine is naturally resistant to both high heat and extreme cold, so travertine pavers can be used in locations that experience below freezing temperatures. The minerals that make travertine pavers also give the surface a natural nonskid surface, even when wet. This is what makes travertine pavers so perfect for use around swimming pools or indoors in kitchens and bathrooms. Outdoor use also benefits from the fact that travertine tends to remain cool to the touch even in direct sun, unlike other materials that can become too hot to walk on without shoes.

These pavers are also quite resilient, and travertine will not usually show wear and tear from moderate use. The colors of travertine pavers will typically not fade and they will retain their luster even after several years. Travertine also does not show efflorescence, a white discoloration that can often be seen in concrete and similar substances.

There are some potential downsides to using travertine pavers, however. While it is a natural stone and quite attractive, the color range of these stones is somewhat limited. Someone looking for striking colors such as blue or green may not be able to find these colors in travertine. Travertine is also not the least expensive material to work with. It certainly is not the most expensive but tends to fall right about in the middle of pricing for pavers.
