The symptoms of mites, which are a type of arachnid, depend on the type of mite involved but usually include respiratory or skin irritation. There are many different types of mites, but some of the most common include dust mites, which cause allergic reactions, and Sarcoptes scabiei mites, which cause a condition called scabies. These pests are most easily seen through a microscope, so many people only become aware of their presence when they develop physical symptoms. No matter which type of pest causes the symptoms, however, getting rid of the mites can be the key to relief.

Dust mites are present in many homes and eat skin cells people shed. These mites are named as such because they choose to live in the dust of a person's home. Many people suffer allergic reactions because of them, including such symptoms as sneezing, coughing, pressure in the sinuses, and itching of the nose and eyes. Some people also develop extreme symptoms of mites that include wheezing and difficulty breathing.

There are many ways in which a person can reduce the dust mite population in his home, which can help relieve allergy symptoms. Vacuuming often and frequently washing one's bedding in hot water can help kill and remove these parasites. They are also attracted to humid areas, so using a dehumidifier can help kill the mites that are already present and prevent new pests from becoming a problem.

Another common type of pest is the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, which causes a condition called scabies. The symptoms of mites that cause scabies are difficult to ignore, as these parasites burrow under a person's skin, causing a very itchy rash. An infected person might also see lines that indicate where the mites are moving around underneath his skin. The itching an infected person experiences is usually extremely intense and becomes worse in the evening, making sleeping difficult. A person might not develop these symptoms of mites for months after he has been infected, however.

Scabies is transmitted through contact with a person infected with the condition. Typically, people get these mites from their loved ones and friends, and they are common in such places as daycare centers and nursing homes. Scabies is contagious and can affect people without regard to age or gender.

To get rid of the symptoms of mites that cause scabies, a person must usually kill these pests. Experts typically recommend visiting a doctor who can provide an accurate diagnosis. Once the source of the irritation has been confirmed, the medical practitioner may prescribe a cream or other type of medication to kill the mites.
