Across the globe, 22 percent of all time spent on the Internet is social. In 2010, users spend one minute in every four and half minutes on a social site, such as a blog or social network. All together, people spend about 110 billion minutes visiting social sites each month. The totals represent an increase of almost 25 percent year-over-year.

- More than 13 billion videos are watched each month on YouTube by 135.7 million users — about 96 videos per user.

A few week ago, I deactivated my Facebook because I found it to be way too distracting. Even though social media has become the norm of our culture, if we're not careful, it can definitely take over our lives, as was the case for me.
As an example, I'm sure we're all familiar with those people whose lives completely revolve around Facebook, and who feel the need to post status updates every five minutes. While many people still seem to enjoy Facebook, for me, the "social media" gimmick has gotten old.
However, that's not to say that I haven't found enjoyment in any form of media. Some of the memes and internet videos are actually pretty funny. I remember how a little over a year ago, a friend of mine was in the college library, and told me to look up a funny video they had sent.
Turns out it revolved around cute puppies trying to climb up the stairs. It really shows how "viral" YouTube has become, and that there's something for everyone, regardless of race, religion or gender.
Speaking of internet use and being social, isn't it funny how much YouTube has changed the way that many of us think about society? Before many video and streaming websites existed, people seemed to be a lot more comfortable talking with other people, and interacting face to face.
However, in this day and age, people tend to do it through messaging, and even YouTube comments. Adding onto to the fact that some people's lives even revolve around YouTube, we can only imagine where society would be if it wasn't for the website.
For example, when I said that some people's lives center on YouTube, I was referring to the fact that many people on the site, play video games for a living, and even get paid based on the amount of subscribers and views. It's amazing to think just how much the media has changed the industry.
In find it funny how the third bullet point mentions that many internet (YouTube) videos are watched during work hours. This probably hits close to home for many, myself included. For most people who watch videos during their work hours though, I'm assuming that this is during a time where they're on break.
Obviously, they wouldn't do this during their work hours, because they're way too busy, and would get in trouble if their boss found out. Regardless, I do think that entertaining videos are something that many people do watch in their spare time. After all, no matter how busy one's life can be, it's always good to get a laugh from streaming media.
