The more common version is a unit that includes two pieces: a chest strap sensor, and a wristwatch receiver. The less common version of a wrist heart rate monitor is a unit that is just a wristwatch with sensors built into the top and bottom of the watch face. I use an expensive heart rate monitor watch because I do training. I'm happy with it, the only issue is that the batteries seem to die too quickly.

@simrin-- I guess you got lucky because I bought a cheap one a few years ago and it was horrible. It didn't give accurate results at all which is not surprising since it takes the pulse from the thumb.

I think the only reliable wrist heart rate monitors are the ones with the chest strap. It's also the only option if you want to keep an eye on your heart continuously rather than at intervals.

I just bought a wrist watch heart rate monitor last week and I love it. It's a very simple one and it cost very little. But it works just as it's supposed to.

I've been comparing the results from my wrist heart rate monitor with my blood pressure monitor because I know the latter shows accurate heart rate. The results have been coming out the same.

So if anyone is looking into a wrist heart rate monitor, just get an affordable one. You don't need to spend much on this.
