When choosing gel cushions for an office chair, automobile, or wheelchair, choose those that are endorsed by orthopedic specialists. Refrain from buying poorly made gel cushions that are very inexpensive, as these may not come with a manufacturer warranty. Some gel cushions are less firm than others, so choose one that offers the density you prefer. You may prefer a gel seat cushion that comes with a travel case for easy transport.

While there are many gel cushions available in stores and online, few models are actually prescribed by physicians. Look for cushions that have been endorsed by physicians. The packaging may show a photograph of the specialist, or the physician's name. Choosing an endorsed product will reduce the likelihood of obtaining an imitation or poor-quality seat cushion.

A gel seat cushion is designed to relieve pressure on the spine while providing lumbar support. For this purpose, be sure the pad is made with gel material, not foam. Examine the cushion and notice if it is made with a grooved center. This may help alleviate pressure on the spine. Some seat cushions are made with gel and foam combined, which may offer a more cushioned feel.

The dimensions of the gel cushion are important as well, as many vary in size. Gel cushions that are small may not do the job they are intended for. For people who have large body frames, look for a deluxe or over-sized gel seat cushion. Also, choose a seat cushion that grips the seat, so it is slip resistant.

Some gel cushions feature removable fleece linings. Fleece-lined cushions are comfortable, especially during cold months, or for automobile use. For easy care, look for gel cushions that have machine washable liners or covers.

You may also wish to choose a gel seat cushion with straps. Velcro® straps work well to secure the seat cushion to most chairs. This feature may prevent slips that can be dangerous for wheelchair users.

If you are buying a gel cushion for a car or truck, make sure it will fit your vehicle. Look for gel cushions that will absorb shock and vibration while driving. This should help reduce driving fatigue and backaches that can occur from driving for an extended period of time. Additionally, you should choose a gel seat cushion that is waterproof to protect against spill damage to your car's interior. Some car seat cushions are made with handles for easy removal.

@ZipLine-- Regardless of which brand you get, make sure it has a trial period so that you can return it if it doesn't work out.

I would like to hear from motorcycle riders, what are you using on your bikes?

I've been hearing a lot about a gel cushion seat with air support. It's supposed to absorb shock while riding. I've been using a standard gel cushion. It works well for the first several hundred miles but after that, it's like it's not even there.

Is there a gel cushion that will get me through 200 miles without serious pain afterward?

I need a gel cushion for my office chair. I've been diagnosed with a herniated disc in my lower back. It hurts the most when I sit and lay down. I've had a rough several days at work, having to get up and move around every so often to relieve the pain.

I've been looking at some gel cushions online but I think I need a specific recommendation. I'm a big guy so I need something that will hold up to my weight.

Any recommendations?
