The best way to select a set of bunk beds is to actually examine a set that is already assembled. Place your hands on the top bunk and try to shake the entire assembly. Be sure to question any movement. Even if you plan to order a set of bunk beds so you can take advantage of a good deal or a sales price, it is best to check the beds out in person, if possible, before placing an order.

Another important thing to keep in mind is the manufacturer's recommendation for weight limits. How large are the children that will be using the bunk beds? The lightest child should use the top bunk. However, it is wise to consider the age of the child as well, since there can be safety concerns with very small children. The manufacturer or reseller should offer guidelines.

Carefully examine bunk beds made from tubular metal. They look cool, but some are not well built. Make sure the set is sturdy. The best sets are those that have a full bed on the bottom and a twin bed on top. The wider lower bed helps create better balance. Bended metal sets are attractive and come in an array of colors to match most design plans.

Another thing to keep in mind is how simple or difficult bunk beds will be to assemble. They look easy, but they can be a little tricky if you do not have a lot of experience with putting things together. Read the directions carefully. If you have trouble, ask someone to help you. You want to make sure the bunk beds are put together securely before your children sleep in them.

Consider purchasing bunk beds that can also be taken apart and used separately. This will give you more options as your children get older. If you purchase a good, sturdy set of bunk beds that can later be used as separate twin beds, it will be a good investment that you can use for years to come.

Price is also an important consideration. Furniture often has a very high mark up, so shop around to find the best deal and get the most for your money.

I agree-- bunk beds are great. We've used them in our house for years....

Finding a good store/site is pretty tricky though. We've used

a site that specialized in bunk beds, loft beds, and all sorts of bedroom furniture.

Does anyone know if you need to purchase special bedding for bunk beds, or are the mattresses standard sizes?

I have seen a few bunk beds that looked like they might be an awkward size, especially those that had different sized bottom and top bunks. I was wondering if there were any hidden costs when purchasing these beds.

I know with futons, the covers for them can get pricey. Bunk beds seem like a great deal, but I just want to make sure I don't have to buy anything special to use them.

Nowadays you can get some really stylish bunk beds that have things like a desk and lightening incorporated in them. This can be great for a small space and keeping your kids happy.

Even if you don't have two children of your own, it can be a good idea to have a bunk bed anyway. It is great if your young one has a friend over for a sleepover and saves you having to set up bedding every time.

I agree that is a good idea to get detachable ones, as you can always split the bunk beds into two units if you move into a bigger place. Having an extra bed around is always handy.
