What Must You Do to Get a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?

Can you raise $30,000? Have you been famous for at least five years and have “unchallengeable” expertise in television, the movies, theater or music? Then you might be eligible for a pink terrazzo marble star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, right alongside Frank Sinatra and Donald Duck. Also, you should note, you have to be willing to attend the unveiling and join in the festivities.

Applications should be sent to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, along with an impressive biography of accomplishments. This is, after all, a tourist attraction, and only the most popular stars will be considered. Every June, a committee selects the year's honorees, and deposits the application fee, which goes toward maintaining the star-studded sidewalks.

Seeing stars in Hollywood:

• Animals with stars include Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. Fictional characters such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Kermit the Frog also have stars. But no reality and Internet stars are allowed (sorry, Kim Kardashian).
• Muhammad Ali did not want people to step on his star, so it was placed on the wall of the Hollywood and Highland shopping center. Ali is one of only a handful of sports stars with a plaque -- it was decided boxing could be considered a "live performance."
• Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 crew weren't honored as the first visitors to the Moon. Instead, a special circular plaque honors their "contributions to the television industry."
