What is the Best Way to get Rid of Excessive Phlegm?

Using herbs, especially those that contain menthol, to naturally break down thick mucus is the best way to get rid of excessive phlegm. Such herbal remedies include using a peppermint ointment to loosen mucus and relieve the chest and nasal passageways of congestion. While eucalyptus does not contain menthol, it acts in a similar fashion by breaking up mucus. Identifying and treating the underlying cause of abnormal amounts of phlegm is also important in getting rid of this condition.

Excessive phlegm is a sign of a respiratory condition. This may be due to an infection or other irritation that is also usually accompanied by inflammation. If the cause of excessive mucus is known, the best way to get rid of it is to work to eliminate this cause through home remedies. Synthetic medications may also be prescribed by a doctor, however, or individuals may wait for the underlying condition to go away on its own with treatments that include bed rest and extra fluid consumption.

When treating excessive amounts of phlegm, specifically, herbal remedies have been known to offer tremendous relief. An example of such remedies includes using ointments with strong menthol agents, such as peppermint. These ointments can be applied under the nose, on the chest and on the neck. By doing so, phlegm and mucus begins to break down and can then be coughed up from the chest. With repeated applications every few hours, this remedy usually solves problems of excessive phlegm within a few days.

Eucalyptus also works to loosen excessive phlegm when used externally as an ointment. Eucalyptus is an active ingredient commonly found in many cough syrups, cough drops and throat lozenges in the United States. Whether applied topically or used in an oral product, eucalyptus helps break phlegm down so it can be eliminated.

Eucalyptus and peppermint products can usually be purchased wherever health products are sold. Each comes in multiple forms, such as ointments or herbal teas. While teas may also be effective, using these herbs in ointment form are most commonly appreciated, as ointments appear to work faster at targeting and eliminating mucus in the chest, throat, and nasal passages. These herbs can also be purchased from reputable online vendors that specialize in the sale of herbal products.

Excessive phlegm can also be eliminated with the use of over-the-counter commercial medications. These products are also commonly advertised as containing menthol, which is also present in peppermint. Overall, using mentholated herbs and commercial products containing menthol is the way to rid the body of excessive phlegm and quickly restore normal breathing.

@kylee07drg – It depends on what the cause of the excess phlegm is. If you have a cold or the flu, then sure, natural herbs are best, because you can only treat the condition at home, anyway.

However, if you have a bacterial infection that has led to pneumonia or bronchitis, then you need to take antibiotics. You might even need steroids to help your immune system fight off the infection.

If you are trying to treat a bacterial condition that is causing phlegm yourself, then you are fighting a losing battle. It's important to see a doctor, who can determine if the infection is viral or bacterial.

I agree with the article that natural herb phlegm treatments are the best. Commercial medicines contain too many chemicals, and to me, they aren't as effective.

I know that coughing up phlegm is necessary to get rid of the infection, but it isn't easy to deal with. I have taken expectorants before that really aggravated my lungs and made me cough more, but I would get so sore and tired from all the coughing that I could hardly stand it!

Eucalyptus salve helped me more than anything. After I had to stop taking expectorants, I started using this salve for relief, and I was amazed at how well it worked.

I rubbed it on my chest, and I could actually feel it penetrating through the skin. It even opened up my sinuses.

I could actually get a little sleep when I used this salve. Somehow, it helped me breathe in the presence of all that phlegm.

Peppermint oil helped ease my chest congestion. I had phlegm in my throat and lungs, and it helped get rid of both.

I boiled a pot of water, and then I added a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the pot. I stood over it and inhaled deeply, and I draped a towel over my head to capture the steam better.

Each treatment lasted for awhile. Whenever I started to feel congested again, I would do it once more.

It's not an instant cure, but it will get you on the road to recovery. It's very pleasant to suddenly feel your chest open up like that after such a long period of tightness.
