What is the Best Sinus Relief?

The best relief for sinus infections and headaches may require a combination of treatment tactics. Remedies often include medication for infection and pain. Decongestants and allergy medications may help, too. Some people also use humidifiers and other methods for keeping the air they breathe moist.

For those who have a sinus infection, antibiotics are the usual course of treatment. To ensure they work well, patients should follow their doctor’s instructions for taking their medication and be sure to finish all of it. If a patient discontinues his antibiotics before he’s supposed to, his symptoms may return. In fact, ending a course of antibiotics too early can cause bacteria to grow stronger and resistant to the prescribed antibiotic.

Many people use over-the-counter pain relievers in order to get relief from sinus headaches. Medications that fight pain and inflammation can provide effective sinus relief. For example, ibuprofen and aspirin can provide effective pain relief. Acetaminophen may help as well.

Antihistamines, medications that reduce allergy symptoms, and decongestants, medications that dry congesting mucus, can be helpful for treating sinus headaches and infections. They help a sinus patient breathe easier. Over-the-counter nasal sprays may work well, too. A doctor may suggest that a sinus patient limit his use of nasal sprays, however, as extended use can lead to addiction.

Staying hydrated is also important for those seeking sinus relief. Drinking lots of clear fluids may help to thin the thick mucus that accompanies sinus infections. Some people suggest avoiding very cold drinks, as they may aggravate symptoms.

Moist air is one of the best natural treatments and prevention methods for sinus problems. Using a humidifier can help keep a dry bedroom comfortable for those with sinus issues. Patients may also experience some sinus relief by taking hot showers and inhaling the steam.

Applying moist heat to the face may help reduce the swelling common with sinus issues, improving circulation and relieving discomfort. To obtain this type of sinus relief, a patient may allow warm water to hit her face when in the shower or use hot compresses. The important thing is to avoid making the water or hot compress too hot. Facial skin can be sensitive, and very hot water can lead to scalds.

Prevention is an important part of keeping the sinuses healthy. To prevent infections and irritation, a person can avoid contact with those who are ill with respiratory infections. It also helps to avoid known allergens. Taking care of general health by eating well, getting plenty of rest, and exercising may help to head off sinus infections as well.

Another sinus congestion relief that I have found helpful is a trip to the steam room. When my sinuses are congested, I go to my gym's steam room and sit for at least 30 minutes and my sinuses begin to drain.

Aside from prescription medication, hot tea is one of my favorite remedies for congested sinuses. The tea also works as a sinus headache relief.

When my sinuses are ailing, I run/pour warm water through them by way of my nose. I add salt to the water and heat it. This is an old and popular remedy and it works for me. The water makes my sinuses drain, which gives me sinus pressure relief.

Be sure to test the water before pouring it into your nasal cavity. You don't want the water to be too warm.
