What is the best pillow?

Hello everyone, what’s the best pillow you’ve ever slept on? I’d like to buy a new pillow to get some better sleep and stop waking up with a sore neck! There are so many different options out there and some of them are pretty expensive, so I want to make sure that I’m choosing the best one. Any suggestions?

If you're looking for a really good night’s sleep, I highly recommend the East Coast pillow. You really can't beat the feel and softness of a down pillow, and I love that the East Coast is hypoallergenic and comes with a soft, 100% cotton cover. I fluff my pillow every morning and it keeps its shape very well after that.

I also enjoy sleeping on a down pillow, and this one is perfect! It's really lofty and fluffy and keeps it shape all night long. The East Coast effortlessly supports my head (I'm a side sleeper) as soon I lay down. My husband is a back sleeper and he loves it, too. It was great getting two pillows for the price I'd ordinarily expect to pay for just one down pillow.

I’m planning to buy a set of East Coast pillows as Christmas gifts for my parents, who never seem to sleep through the night. Getting two pillows for this price seems like excellent value!

@Elaine Fitzgerald, can you feel the feathers in this pillow? The down pillows at my grandmother’s house always had bits of feathers poking out!

There’s a big difference between a feather pillow and a down pillow. The East Coast is 100% down, so you won’t hear or feel the filling, except for noticing how comfortable it is!

If you haven’t heard of the East Coast pillow, you’ve got to check it out. I was skeptical that a pillow could make a difference for my insomnia and migraines, but now I’m falling asleep much faster and having fewer migraines a month.

@Alonso Bray, I totally agree. I never knew that a down pillow could be so comfortable and supportive! The East Coast conforms really nicely to the shape of my head, and it gives my neck proper support so I wake up pain-free.

I’ve been pretty satisfied with Beckham Luxury Linens. It comes as a set of two pillows and is a good budget option. It’s basically a synthetic alternative to a down pillow, ... with a nice cotton cover. I’ve never suffered from insomnia, so I’m not sure if it will help with that, but I can honestly say that I’ve never woken up with a sore neck after sleeping on this pillow. Read more

@Christopher McCarthy, is this pillow washable? It’s hard to tell from the photos if it comes with a separate cover.

No, it doesn’t have a separate cover, but you can wash the entire pillow. Try a delicate cycle. It takes a very long time to dry, though!

I’m a fan of the Sweetnight memory foam pillow. I’m sleeping through the night and waking up without a stiff neck! The washable cover is very breathable, and the bamboo fabric feels great, even though I have sensitive skin.

The Sweetnight is a good suggestion. With other pillows my pet peeve is that they’re usually too high, but you can take some of the filling out of the Sweetnight in order to make it the right height for you.

@Diana Sharp, is the Sweetnight actually breathable? Doesn’t memory foam absorb heat?

If you like an extra firm pillow, I recommend the PineTales buckwheat pillow. It may take some time to get used to sleeping on dried buckwheat hulls, but it’s an interesting alternative to memory foam pillows, which can get pretty hot. The PineTales circulates air very well, so it stays cool.

I was told that a very firm pillow could help with my scoliosis, so I’ve been sleeping on a PineTales pillow for the last few months. I switched from a millet pillow (different brand), and I prefer the PineTales. The bamboo cover ... is especially nice and cool, and it’s equipped with durable YKK zippers. Read more

@Jeff Francis, I had a millet pillow once, do you think they’re similar?

It’s a bit on the pricey side, but the Malouf pillow might be what you’re looking for. It’s helped with my neck and upper back pain. The design is called “Zoned Dough” ... because the center is squishy, like dough, while the edges are firmer to support your neck and shoulders.Read more

The Malouf is the best pillow I’ve slept on in terms of neck support, but I think many people will find that it’s too firm. The Malouf is definitely an investment, but it has a 5-year warranty ... so if it doesn’t work out, you should be able to return it. Read more

I’m also a fan of the Malouf pillow. It’s pretty supportive and there are holes for air circulation, so it stays cool. The bamboo charcoal memory foam also helps with temperature regulation. ... I have the high loft pillow because I sleep on my side, but back sleepers might be better off with the mid loft pillow. Read more

If you’re looking for a very firm pillow to help with neck pain, Casper Sleep makes a three-layer memory foam pillow that’s very supportive. My dad has one and he swears by it, ... although it feels like it would be too stiff for me. He sleeps with a very thin feather pillow on top of his Casper. Read more

The Casper pillow is definitely on the firm side. It eventually contours to your head, but it takes a while. My boyfriend says I’ve stopped tossing and turning so much, probably because the memory foam keeps my head in place. ... I'll probably go for a shredded memory foam pillow when I have to replace this, because I’d like to find something that’s very supportive but has more give to it. Read more
