A wood patio is an outdoor area that incorporates wood flooring and possibly wood fencing rather than concrete pavement. The patio is generally adjacent or attached to a private home or other building. Typically built for leisure activities, a wood patio may also be used for outdoor cooking and dining. The patio can be built from various types of wood and coated with protective sealant to guard against weather damage.

When building a wood patio, there are several types of wood to consider. The preferred wood is one that is specially designed for outdoor use. Most commonly used, cedar is a type of wood that is durable and resists fading and chipping. Although this wood is resistant to the elements, a wood patio made from cedar is typically treated with a stain or sealer to help preserve its longevity. Redwood is another choice material for building a patio or outdoor deck.

The design of the patio is generally built to be attractive, yet functional and practical. Some of the wood patio designs may feature an overhead roof. This may help to provide shade from the sun. An awning for the wood patio may also help to maintain a lower outdoor temperature of the patio area.

There are enclosed wood patios that provide protection from insects. A screened area may be part of the patio, as well as some type of canopy. Fencing around wood patios may be a consideration for those who keep their pets outdoors. Many wood patios also have stairs as well.

Wood patio awnings generally utilize wooden beams to fasten to the building. The height may vary according to preference and size of the home or building. Many homeowners choose to build a wood awning for the patio, without the expense of utilizing a contractor's services. Generally, this works best for those who have carpentry knowledge and experience.

Some wood patios feature a raised surface that sets above the soil. This is often known as a patio deck. Typically more roomy than an average wood patio, the wood deck patio generally makes the outdoor area of a home appear more spacious. A flat wooden patio is often used on a level surface or yard. When the designated area has poor drainage, however, the wood deck patio is generally preferred.

Depending upon local regulations, when building wood patios and decks, one may need to abide by zoning restrictions. When remodeling or adding a structure to the outside of a home, it's best to check with the local authorities to be sure one is building in compliance with local regulations. These standards may vary depending upon jurisdiction.
