When choosing a type of home security surveillance system, outdoor home security cameras are one factor that should be taken into consideration. Different makes and models of outdoor home security cameras come with an array of features and components that are important for a person considering installation of a home security system. The choice often comes down to personal preferences regarding those features and components.

Outdoor home security cameras can be wired or wireless. Security cameras that are wireless require less manual installation, while a security camera that is wired requires running a series of cables between it and the surveillance monitor. Wireless cameras also have the advantage of being easily installed in places that would be difficult for a wired camera to be used, especially outdoors. Cameras that are wireless, however, may have difficulties with power and interference of broadcast signals. Weather conditions such as rain, snow, and wind; and physical terrain like walls, hills, and other buildings can also interfere with a wireless camera's broadcast signal.

Conditions outdoors are an important consideration in the choice of outdoor home security cameras. One type of security camera has an isolating enclosure for wind vibration. The surveillance apparatus has three elongated structural components, including a base anchor, a core structure that carries the surveillance equipment, and an enclosure attaching to the initial base anchor while surrounding the core structure and surveillance equipment. The enclosure takes the impact of the wind, providing the core with protection from the vibrations. This very useful because wind vibrations can affect the resolution of outdoor home security cameras, as well as interfere with their signals.

Other kinds of outdoor home security cameras include mounted dome units to be installed on the eaves of a home's roof. These kinds of surveillance units are made to adapt to the outdoor environment of the user’s home and control its stability by cooling or heating itself. The surveillance apparatus has a camera capable of movement and can be wired or wireless. This type of assembly also includes a dome with a camera inside, circulation fans, exhaust fans, and a thermostat to send signals to turn the fans on or off.

Internal components are another important consideration when choosing outdoor home security cameras. Some cameras come with a magnetic adjustor inside the body. This type of camera has one optoelectronical module coaxially mounted inside the case with a lens, and a magnetic adjustor which improves focus adjustment ranges of the camera. The technology is also lower in cost of production than some other models.
