Oil-free makeup is designed for individuals who have oily or acne-prone skin, as oil-based cosmetics can clog the pores and irritate the skin. Those who have sensitive skin may also benefit from the use of oil-free makeup. There are several types of oil-free cosmetics, including foundation, blush, and concealer. Instead of using oil as a base, most oil-free products use water because it will not clog the pores on the face.

One of the most popular forms of this type of makeup is oil-free foundation. Most foundations contain oil, which can easily cause acne in those who already have oily skin. A water-based foundation will offer coverage without adding any extra oil to the skin. Since foundation is typically applied to the entire face, it can be extremely helpful to those who have acne-prone skin to use an oil-free product.

Concealer that contains oil can also clog the pores. Much like foundation, concealer is used over areas of the face that are prone to breakouts and oiliness. Often times, concealer is used on top of blemishes in an attempt to cover them up. An oil-free concealer can be especially beneficial for those who use the makeup on already-existing blemishes, as it does not contain any added oil and so won't exacerbate the problem.

Although it is better to use a powder blush on oily skin, many prefer the dewy appearance that a cream blush provides. Oil-free cream blushes are available to those who have oily skin but still wish to use a creamy blush. Oil-free bronzers are also available for those who prefer a bronzed appearance. Like the majority of oil-free foundations and concealers, oil-free cream blushes and bronzers are usually water-based.

When using oil-free makeup, one may find the use of an oil-free makeup remover to be helpful as well. Typically, liquid makeup removers contain a considerable amount of oil and can cause acne when used regularly. Oil-free makeup removers usually contain aloe vera or cucumber extract to soothe and moisturize the skin while removing makeup from the eye and face area.

Many oil-free makeup products also contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, which helps to treat and prevent acne. It is important for those with oily skin to regularly wash the face with a gentle cleanser to remove excess oil. Using an oil-free moisturizer on the face can also be helpful in the prevention of acne.
