Grammar is one of the first subjects taught in school, and with good reason: it contains the structural rules for language itself, forming the foundation for oral and written communication. As a field of study, grammar is generally subdivided into a few areas, which can be thought of as grammar tools. Studying how the words of a language are constructed, how they sound, what they mean and how they are put together is all part of grammar. In addition to these topics, the term "grammar tools" may refer to learning materials designed to make the subject more readily comprehensible, as well as provide resources to help individuals improve their grammar skills.

Language comprises grammar, and its subtopics can be viewed as tools that make the nuances of spoken and written language more intelligible. Some types of these grammar tools, like morphology and phonology, help people understand grammar at its rudimentary level, including word components and the sounds they make. Others, like semantics and syntax, help people make correct word choices and place them correctly in sentences and phrases.

Morphology is the study of word components, known as morphemes, while phonology is the study of phonemes, the actual sounds words make. Both are relevant grammar tools, as they provide a better understanding of the most basic meanings and structure of words, along with how they sound when spoken. Other valuable grammar tools are syntax and semantics, which address the meaningful combination of words into clauses, phrases, and sentences to further expand language and facilitate communication. A written composition or essay is a favorite teaching tool that allows each student to demonstrate how well he or she understands the principles of grammar. The essay provides the format for a student to combine all he or she has learned about grammar into one cohesive piece of communication.

Grammar tools are useful for everyone who wishes to communicate intelligibly and effectively in spoken and written language. Studies of the the subtopics mentioned above are useful for initial language learning and reinforcing the rules of grammar. The term "grammar tools" may also be used to refer to the learning materials themselves, however, such as textbooks, online tutorials, word processing software, and self-check resources help individuals correct, strengthen, and improve their language and communication. For instance, most word processors contain spelling and grammar checkers. Grammar textbooks and online tutorials provide opportunities to review important facts and principles about grammar, and then offer self-check quizzes or exams.

@raynbow- Thank you for the tip and the reminder to students that this option is available. I had a grammar tutor in college, and her help was the only tool that helped me get a good grade in the class!

Anyone student who is having difficulties grasping the rules of grammar should get the help of an English tutor. In my opinion, this is the best type of grammar tool because working with one allows a student to learn first-hand about grammar terms and rules that may seem very abstract in a text book.

A tutor is also a good tool to utilize because a student can ask questions in a timely way. This helps with the learning process, because once a question is answered, a student can go on to the next concept that he or she doesn't understand.

Most grade schools, high schools, and even colleges offer tutors for free to students. Anyone student who thinks that a grammar tutor may the the tool that helps him or her improve his or her English grades should talk to a school guidance counselor or an academic adviser.
