Sometimes it can be difficult to locate cheap activities for kids. Many recreational pursuits are expensive and out of reach for many families who struggle to survive financially. A thrifty parent who wants to provide cheap activities for kids can find inexpensive alternatives by being aware of programs and services available for kids.

The local public library is a smart choice for families who want to provide their children with free entertainment. Most public libraries offer programs free of charge to anyone in the community. Storytimes, special children's events, and teen programs feature stories, arts and crafts, prizes, and sometimes even snacks. After school clubs that cater to a variety of interests are also featured at the local public library. Whether a child enjoys reading, computers, photography, drama, or knitting, the public library may have a program that suits the interests of children and teens.

Community centers such as the YMCA or Boys and Girls Club provide cheap activities for kids. These nonprofit organizations feature sports teams, dance classes, and other programs at varying prices. Some programs may even feature field trips to places of interest within the community.

Some cities are home to museums that offer free admission on a regular basis or on particular days of the week. Parents who wish to save money can take their children to a museum and take advantage of free or inexpensive programs offered by the museum's education department. Exhibits, demonstrations, and special events are all typical offerings. The local zoo usually is an inexpensive way to spend the day with the kids as well. Consider purchasing a museum or zoo family membership in order to receive free admission year round.

Visiting a local park is a cheap activity that is easy on the wallet as well. Most parks have a variety of playground equipment on which children can play as parents watch nearby. Swings, slides, merry-go-rounds, and forts are just a few pieces of equipment kids can use at the local park. Some parks are near lakes or ponds, providing families opportunities to feed ducks or other wildlife.

Window shopping at the mall, playing miniature golf, going to the local beach, taking a nature walk, or other cheap activities will help parents on a budget find fun places to take their children. The important thing to remember is that it isn't necessary to spend a great deal of money to provide recreation for children. Most communities offer at least a few places that cost very little yet provide children with wholesome entertainment.

@gardenturtle: My daughter loves to paint on rocks. I bought her up some markers, finger-paint, glue, and some different beads and ribbons. She loves to be creative and make fancy rocks!

We also do a lot of puzzles on rainy days.

@gardenturtle: I am a mom of three so I am also always looking for cheap family activities. My kids love to go to the local dollar store. Even though the toys are not very durable, they are amused for a low price. We found a kite at the dollar store and my son really enjoyed playing with it.

You can also involve your children in home crafts. You could let them help make a family member a birthday card or a card for any other special occasion. Let them be creative.
