How Quickly Does the Earth Travel?

The movement of the earth must be measured relative to something else. Speed is how fast something is moving whereas velocity is the rate at which something moves or changes position. The earth travels around the sun at roughly 67,000 miles per hour (107,826 kilometers per hour). This is the velocity of the earth around the sun. The earth also spins around its own axis, at 1000 miles per hour (1609 kilometers per hour.)

We can't feel the earth's movement because it is constant and we are moving along with it. This is much like when we don't feel movement in an airplane that's flying at constant speed.

More about earth and space:

  • Until the 16th century, humans believed that the earth was the center of the universe and that it did not move.
  • Our solar system moves around the Milky Way galaxy at a speed of 560,000 mph (901,232 kph).
  • The Great Attractor is a region of space 150 million light years away from the earth that attracts the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies.
