Extracted from the liver of the cod fish, cod liver oil is prepared by first steaming the livers and then decanting them. @fify-- Cod liver oil has been used for arthritis since the late 1800s, it's not new. The only downside is that it's most effective at higher doses (several grams a day) and it's very hard to take that much.

I started taking cod liver oil for my rheumatoid arthritis two months ago. I take two spoons of liquid, flavored cod liver oil daily. I think it's working because this week, I was able to reduce my pain medication a little bit.

Is anyone else on cod liver oil for arthritis? I'm wondering if I can keep taking this indefinitely or if it will eventually stop working?

I'm not surprised by the use of cod liver oil for arthritis. More than thirty years ago, when I developed a lumbar herniated disc and couldn't even walk from the pain, a natural healer treated me with fish! She literally took fresh fish, cut it up and applied it on my back for days.

I smelled disgusting but the fish softened and relaxed the muscles and allowed me to walk again.

I'm sure that no one would want to apply fish or fish oil on their skin nowadays, so taking cod liver oil supplements is a better alternative.
