How do I Sew Hair Extensions?

People use hair extensions for many reasons, such as to add color or to change hairstyles without cutting their natural hair. There are several ways to add extensions to the hair. One common way is sewing. To sew hair extensions, you will need to know how to braid or to have someone available who can. You will also need thread and a special needle that can generally be purchased at beauty supply stores.

Before you sew hair extensions into your hair, it is best to wash your hair. Having a clean scalp is important because it can reduce or eliminate intense itching you may otherwise experience. It is important for the hair to be clean; if it is soiled with products such as hair spray or gel it may not be very manageable. After you wash the hair, be sure to dry it, otherwise it may begin to smell bad after you sew hair extensions into it.

To sew hair extensions effectively, you need something to attach them to. In most instances, this is going to be a braid. You will need to cornrow braid the areas of the hair where you want to put the hair extensions. It is best to make the braids skinny and to place them fairly close together. When the braids are skinny, this prevents a look of bulkiness. When the braids are spaced close together, you will be able to overlap the extensions in a manner that looks more natural.

When braiding the hair, it is also important to consider the style you hope to achieve when you are finished. In some instances it may be suitable to cornrow braid the hair from front to back. In other instances the hair may need to be braided from one side to the other. If you plan to have a part or bangs, for example, this must be considered.

Once you have finished the braiding, you will be ready to sew the hair extensions in. Begin by holding the end of one of your hair extensions to the beginning of one of your cornrow braids. Use the needle to draw the thread through the track of the extension and through the braid. Pull it so the extension is closely connected to the braid. You need to continue sewing the thread through the extension’s track and your braid until you reach the end of a row.

If your extensions continue past your braid, when you come to the end of the braid, you must cut your extensions. Then you will need to cut the thread, but before you do, you need to sew a tight knot at the end of the row that will prevent the thread from unraveling. Then, cut any dangling thread and proceed to the next row until you have finished sewing in your hair extensions.

Any good remy hair extension will not have their track glued. Weaves should not be sewn through the track, rather around the track. You should not cut the tracks when you come to the end of the row, rather fold the track over and continue sewing in on the next row down. This method is mainly for 'good' hair.

When one gets a stellar set of hair extensions, they would like to potentially reuse them, maybe years later. It is to keep these extensions in good condition for reuse that a pro weaver should always minimize cutting to only extreme (above forehead for example) situations, and never sew through the track. This is the secret of how good stylists keep their customers coming back.

Because they charge more for a reinstall anyway, and their customers are saving money from having to buy as much hair as they normally would. Good hair extensions look better the longer it is conditioned and used.
