There are three ways to learn air conditioner repair: research air conditioner repair, take a course, and complete a training program. Air conditioners are units designed to pull air from the circulation system in a building, cool the temperature of the air, and return it to the circulation system. The type, size, and complexity of the air conditioner depends on the size of the space and the type of air circulation system used.

There are two types of air conditioner units: residential and commercial. Residential units can be small, window units designed to cool one room, or larger units designed to cool the entire home. Commercial units are much larger, typically installed on the roof of a building, and are designed to work with commercial air circulation systems.

It is important to note that you must be a licensed heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) mechanic to work on commercial air conditioner units. However, this is not the case for residential units. A person who is good with tools can complete basic air conditioner repair techniques on most air conditioner units. Check the owner’s manual with care, as some manufacturers void the warranty if the unit is repaired by anyone other than a licensed mechanic, certified in their product line.

There are a wide range of books, magazines, and articles on the Internet to help learn basic repair techniques. The first step when using this method to learn air conditioner repair is to ensure the instructions apply to the model and design of air conditioner unit that you have. Review the instructions in detail before you begin and always completely unplug the unit from the electricity. Write down the repair plan and identify any equipment or tools required before starting the process.

Air conditioning repair courses are available at a wide range of community and career colleges. Their courses are usually offered in the evening and on weekends and will provide a thorough training in repair techniques, common issues, and how to select a suitable air conditioner. Make sure that a certified HVAC mechanic is teaching the course and that all the information is current.

In order to become a professional air conditioner mechanic, a full training program is required. These programs are usually two to three years in length, and combine work placements with classroom learning. Upon completion of this program, graduates may find employment opportunities in air conditioning installation and repair firms, building maintenance companies or open their own air conditioning company.
