If you are looking to improve your muscle tone, there are several ways to do so. These include doing simple exercises such as push-ups and sit-ups, and using equipment such as barbells and dumbbells. The best methods for you usually will depend on your resources and your exercise preferences.

You do not have to spend a lot of money to improve your muscle tone. It can be accomplished in your home with basic equipment. One of the best ways to improve muscle tone is by strength training. Dumbbell exercises are one great type of strength training. You do not need to eliminate the other elements of your workout routine. Instead, you can incorporate a dumbbell routine.

Many people are turned off by dumbbell routines because they find them boring. This does not have to be the case. Dumbbells can be used with a variety of exercises including shrugs, leg curls, and squats. You might simply need a creative routine to break the boredom.

If you are not interested in using dumbbells, you can use resistance equipment. Such items are generally rather inexpensive. There are several types of resistance bands and straps available. These can provide the same results as weights while allowing you to engage in other types of exercises.

There are certain exercise routines that you may only perform several times per week. It will be very helpful, however, if you commit to doing certain basic exercises daily. These include sit-ups, crunches, and push-ups. You can quickly do several sets of these exercises each morning or evening.

If you have the time and the finances, you can join a gym. There, you should find a great deal of equipment that can help you to achieve your goals. You can use free weights, barbells, and various types of weight machines. Also, you may have access to a personal trainer who can help to guide you along the way and target difficult areas. Another good thing about joining a gym is that there are often classes available that focus on muscle tone.

The swimming pool can be another good place to improve your muscle tone. Water fitness classes can be a fun and effective way to achieve your goals. Such classes are often offered at community centers which only charge a small fee for those classes that you attend. If this is not available in your area or does not work with your schedule but you have access to a pool, you can get water fitness books from the library and develop your own routines.

@Glasshouse - I just wanted to add that doing your cardio exercises at the end of your workout and using toning exercises to warm up will allow you to burn more calories. I read that you don't burn calories until your heart rate is accelerated, but you continue to burn them long after your workout.

Muscle tone is related mostly to the outer layers of muscle, water retention, and levels of fat. To tone muscle the idea is to do cardio workouts, keep water weight off, and do light weight training with lots of repetitions. Exercises that use light weights with 12-20 repetitions will help to tone your muscles. Exercises that consist of moderate weights and 8-12 repetitions are necessary to maintain strength and muscle mass. Finally exercises that use maximum weights and 4-8 repetitions (or until completely exerted) will stimulate deep muscle tissue and lead to increased mass. Be sure to seek advice on proper technique and safety issues from a trainer or doctor before hitting the weight room.
