How Do I Choose the Best Herbal Treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis?

Choosing the best herbal treatment for bacterial vaginosis is often a matter of trial and error because each person responds differently to each remedy. A doctor should be consulted in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis and discuss possible side effects and medication interactions before using an herbal remedy for bacterial vaginosis. Some of the most popular herbs for the treatment of this type of vaginal infection include tea tree oil, echinacea, and goldenseal. Supplements such as black walnut extract, aloe vera, and garlic may also be used to treat this condition. While herbal treatment for bacterial vaginosis can normally be used in conjunction with more traditional medications, it should not be used as a substitute for proper medical care.

Tea tree oil is perhaps the most popular herbal treatment for bacterial vaginosis due to its natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties. A carrier oil such as olive oil should be used to dilute this product before application due to the possibility of skin irritation and damage to the delicate mucus membranes of the vagina. Thought to be more effective when applied inside the vagina, many women like to soak a tampon in a tea tree oil solution and insert it for a couple of hours at a time.

Echinacea and goldenseal are often used to treat vaginal infections caused by bacteria. Thought to improve the function of the immune system, echinacea may help the body fight the bacterial infection naturally. Stomach upset and allergic reactions are possible side effects of echinacea. Goldenseal is believed to combat bacterial and yeast infections and is also used as an immune system booster. This herb can be toxic to newborn babies and should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Black walnut extract and aloe vera are commonly used to treat vaginal infections and the associated symptoms. Tinctures containing black walnut oil may be taken orally to fight bacteria in the bloodstream. Some studies have suggested that those using black walnut oil for extended periods of time may have an increased risk of developing oral cancer. Aloe vera is considered safe for use by most people and helps to soothe pain and itching associated with bacterial vaginosis.

Garlic has been known for centuries to have antibacterial properties and may be used as an herbal treatment for bacterial vaginosis. While some women use garlic cloves as vaginal suppositories, significant skin irritation is possible when this method is chosen. A safer choice is to add fresh garlic to recipes or take a garlic supplement, which is available without a prescription at most pharmacies.

Has anyone here tried coconut oil as a herbal treatment for bacterial vaginosis?

I know many people use diluted tea tree oil but I've not heard coconut oil being mentioned. As far as I know, coconut oil has natural antibacterial properties and can kill bacteria much like tea tree oil. And it's gentler than tea tree oil so wouldn't it be better for bacterial vaginosis? I could be wrong, I'm just wondering if this could be another treatment option for women battling this type of infection.

@fify-- I've been hearing a lot about garlic as well but there is no way that I can eat raw garlic or insert garlic vaginally. I could maybe take odorless garlic capsules, I will have to look into that sometime.

For now, I'm drinking cranberry juice (natural, no sugar added variety), taking probiotic supplements and eating lots of fresh vegetables and fruits to keep my immune system strong. My sister also recommended wiping/cleaning the vaginal area with witch hazel and I'm doing that as well.

Garlic has to be the best herbal treatment for bacterial vaginosis. It isn't used for infections since centuries for no reason! It really works. I ate raw garlic daily and inserted garlic capsules vaginally to treat my bacterial vaginosis. It worked! The odor was gone in a few days and the infection in another few days.
