In order to choose the best avocado face mask, all of the ingredients in addition to the avocado must be considered. A ripe avocado all by itself provides a number of benefits to the skin. Therefore, it is the additional ingredients that set one avocado face mask apart from the others.

For ages the avocado has been revered for its culinary uses, as well as its ability to provide nutrition. For nearly as long it has also been revered for the ways in which it can benefit the skin through topical applications. It is believed that avocado skin products were used by people in Central America in pre-Columbian times. Although the very first avocado face mask may have simply been a smear of the ripe fruit, today there are an array of face masks that use avocado along with other ingredients as well.

An face mask can offer a number of benefits to the skin. Avocados are rich in natural emollients which means that they can be very beneficial to dry skin. They are also rich in vitamins and nutrients, which, when absorbed through the use of a face mask, can be beneficial to the skin.

Companies that sell these face masks often blend avocado or avocado oil with other ingredients such as clay or oatmeal. Clay is an ingredient that is used in beauty products to help purify the skin and pull dirt and excess oil out of the pores. Oatmeal is a product that is used to soothe irritated skin. As these two products benefit the skin in different ways, an avocado face mask with one or the other will provide different sorts of treatments for the skin.

Many people think the best avocado face mask is the kind that can be whipped up right in one's own kitchen. Avocados generally do not keep very well after they have ripened and been processed by mashing. In order to package the face mask, a skin care company will usually have to mix some sort of stabilizer, a product that may be a chemical or non-organic additive, into the formula.

People who prefer to avoid chemicals and additives in their skin care products, therefore, prefer to make their own avocado face masks. An easy recipe calls for a ripe avocado, a squirt of honey, and a dollop of plain yogurt. Mash the avocado, then add the honey followed by the yogurt. Apply a thin layer to the face and leave it there for 15 minutes before washing it away with warm water.

@raynbow- I like to put the avocado and lemon facial mask on about 30 minutes before I get into a warm shower. The steam helps the mixture condition my skin. Before I get out of the shower, I simply rinse the mask off my face. It makes my skin feel great!

@heavanet- That sounds like a nice combination. How long do you leave it on, and do you follow up with soap when you wash the mask off your face?

I like to mash a very ripe avocado with a few drops of lemon juice for a facial mask. The avocado is very soothing and moisturizing, while the lemon adds a pleasant scent to the mixture.
