Aloe vera comes in a variety of forms, including gels, creams, ointments and raw aloe vera leaves. Choosing the best aloe vera ointment depends on what you need it for, the quality of the aloe vera and how you want to apply it. Aloe vera applied topically is considered safe, but you should consult a doctor if you have sensitive skin or known skin allergies.

The most common use for aloe vera ointment, primarily in gel-like form, is for burns of various kinds, including sunburns. The active compounds in aloe vera can reduce inflammation and decrease pain in burns, as well as promote skin growth and skin repair. Although aloe vera ointment can help with burns, it is not generally recommended for use on an open wound, such as a cut or burn that has severely damaged the skin.

If you use aloe vera ointment for sunburns or dry skin, it is best to choose an ointment that has little or no alcohol, as alcohol is an astringent and can dry out the skin. Many aloe vera ointments contain alcohol, so be sure to look at the label before you buy a specific brand. Some ointments have extra ingredients added, which might help with the healing process but could just be added to enhance the aroma. If you don’t want added ingredients, ointments are available that are made solely from aloe vera.

The best way to be sure you get pure aloe vera ointment is by using an aloe vera plant. The gel in the leaves is easily accessible by breaking off a leaf and rubbing it on the skin. If you do decide to purchase an aloe vera plant, be sure to get the proper plant. Many plants look like aloe vera but are not the correct species; the correct species is Aloe Barbadensis Miller.

Aloe vera ointment is not as common as gels or creams but can usually be found in drug stores, online or in holistic pharmacies. If you choose to purchase an ointment online, make sure you read the ingredients listed to ensure you are getting exactly what you want. Aloe vera plants are available in a variety of places, including nurseries, the gardening sections of home improvement stores, and in some grocery stores. If you choose to purchase a plant for use as an ointment, verify with a salesperson that the plant you purchase is the correct species.

There is an aloe vera ointment at the pharmacy that I love. It has aloe vera and lidocaine in it. Lidocaine is a topical pain reliever. I use this ointment whenever I burn my skin or when I have an insect bite. It relieves burning, itching and pain immediately. It's not very good on cuts, but it's perfect for skin conditions where the skin is not broken. It's a staple in my medicine cabinet.

@fify-- Yes, aloe vera is very good for treating scars and blemishes. It's also good for oily skin because it hydrates without causing more oil production.

I think for the face, it's best to use pure aloe vera gel. There are creams that contain aloe vera, but you never know how much aloe vera is found in those. Usually they contain very little aloe vera and a bunch of other ingredients that are bad for acne-prone skin.

Aloe vera gel is just aloe vera. It's more effective and since it doesn't contain any creams or oils, it won't irritate your skin and cause breakouts.
