How Do I Become a Hospitality Consultant?

Jennifer Leigh

A four-year degree in hospitality management is a helpful step to become a hospitality consultant, but is not always necessary to succeed in the field. Some education is generally required, at least a high school diploma or GED, as well as experience in hospitality. Since the hospitality industry covers a broad spectrum of specific fields, including lodging, restaurants, and tourism, it is a good idea to make a choice about the specific area in which you wish to further your career. You can become a hospitality consultant by beginning in an entry-level position and working your way to a consultant position, or by gaining an education and beginning in a higher-level position.

Obtaining a high school diploma or GED is the first step in your goal to be a hospitality consultant. Upon graduation, you can decide whether to begin work in an area of hospitality directly or continue your education to receive an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree in the field. A higher level of education will make it easier to become a hospitality consultant without having a lot of prior experience. If you do not obtain an education, you will need to spend more time working your way towards the career of hospitality consultant.

Experience in the specific area of hospitality that you wish to consult in is a good step to become a hospitality consultant. Consultants are found in hotels, in jobs such as concierge or event planner, at restaurants, and in other areas of tourism such as cruise ships or travel agencies. An entry-level position in one of these fields can provide you with experience that you can use when applying for specific jobs in the future. In addition, an internship with a hospitality organization while in school can lead to valuable connections within the hospitality industry.

Once you have education and experience in hospitality, you can begin to apply for jobs as a hospitality consultant. Jobs are available in all areas of the hospitality industry, and applications generally require an updated resume, cover letter, and references from your education or past employers. If you are hired, you will likely undergo training in the specific area of hospitality that you are entering into as a career. It is also possible to become a hospitality consultant who works independently through a private consulting agency for events such as weddings, parties, and catering.
