A person who is looking to become a cloud architect will need to have at least a bachelor's degree in a technical field. In addition to having a formal education, someone who is looking to work as a cloud architect will need to be able to define and create the appropriate cloud-based solutions for clients in an effective and cost-efficient manner. Cloud architects are in huge demand, and to stand out from the competition, prospective candidates will need to acquire additional certifications to successfully quantify their knowledge and experience.

The cloud architecture industry is based on providing virtual technological solutions to customers. These solutions can vary from virtual storage space to document creation. Someone who is looking to become a cloud architect will need to be well-versed in virtualization and have at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a similarly technical field.

Although obtaining a college degree is a main requirement of becoming a cloud architect, candidates also must understand the mechanics of cloud development. Many cloud technologies are delivered as on-demand software, also known as software as a service (SaaS), so cloud architects must be able to operate within this framework. Someone who is looking to get a job as a cloud architect will also need to understand a variety of programming languages and protocols to create and implement successful cloud environments.

Many cloud architects will be required to have at least two years of experience working with open-source technologies and SaaS frameworks. Becoming a cloud architect is not an entry-level position, and someone who is looking to become a cloud architect should first attempt to acquire a position as a software programmer. This position should revolve around creating online software solutions for companies, because this will best prepare the candidate for the requirements associated with creating cloud architectures and environments. After obtaining a good understanding of cloud technology and real-world experience, a prospective candidate will be in a better position to obtain a cloud architect position.

There also are several certifications available to give someone who is looking to become a cloud architect a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Some certifications educate participants on how to deploy, operate and manage cloud applications, among other valuable skills. Others are geared toward prospective candidates who specialize in creating cloud environments revolving around storage, networking and virtual applications.
