What Should I Consider When Buying Pillows?

There are many different types of pillows to suit the many different uses for them in the home. There are throw pillows, floor pillows, bed pillows and even travel pillows. Selecting pillows to buy obviously depends on the purpose they will serve, but bed pillows are perhaps the most purposeful types of pillows. Since you sleep on them every night, there are several important criteria to consider when purchasing them.

First consider the contents of your pillows. Bed pillows are available with a variety of fill material - from polyester and synthetic materials to goose feathers. Some bed pillows are comprised of foam rather than stuffing. The type of fill material that you choose is a matter of personal preference, but keep in mind any allergies that you or your bedmate might have. Though many people are not bothered by the filling in their pillows, others must use pillows made of hypoallergenic materials.

Comfort is another consideration when buying pillows. Much like a mattress, pillows offer different levels of support. Some bed pillows are firm while others are soft. Pillows made of memory foam material are similar to mattresses made of the same material except with less density. Choosing pillows that offer the right support for your particular sleeping position will prevent muscle cramps in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Due to dust mites, which can adversely affect people with allergies, it is suggested that most bed pillows be replaced approximately every six months. Foam filled pillows can be replaced less often. Bed pillows actually come in different sizes so be sure you have pillowcases to fit the pillows you select. In addition to standard, queen, and king sized pillows, you can also purchase body pillows, but there is generally far less selection in this size.

Regardless of the size or type of pillow you choose, comfort should be the top priority. If you buy pillows that you find uncomfortable to sleep on, try another kind. Once you find pillows you like, stick with them to continually enjoy a good night’s rest.

Down pillows are comfortable, but they can also be a bit pricey. Because they can become mildewy from the moisture, they need to be replaced often. Probably anywhere from three to five years.
