If you are remodeling or adding a bedroom, closet doors are one of the options you can choose to update or finish the space. While there are many different types of interior doors, mirrored closet doors have several advantages over standard closet doors. When buying this type of door, consider the different varieties available as well as whether they would compliment your finished room.

One of the biggest advantages to mirrored closet doors is the effect that they can have on the appearance of the room. As with any large mirrors, they can make a room appear larger. This is especially true of a room with only one closet. Using mirrored doors in a room with more than one closet may have the opposite effect, however. If the closets are not directly opposite one another, it may still have a positive impact, but opposing doors with mirrors will create a confusing optical illusion that will most likely distract from the room's overall appearance.

Another advantage to having mirrored doors on the closet is that they allow you to dress in full view. Rather than hanging a full-length mirror on the back of a door or the outside of a solid closet door, the mirror is built in. It will also typically provide a larger viewing area, which is ideal for taller or bigger people.

Some of the disadvantages of mirrored closet doors are safety and maintenance. Since most mirrored doors are made of tempered material, not glass, they are resistant to breaking. However, these closet doors may not be the best choice in the room of a small or rambunctious child. Also, fingerprints will be a constant issue on the mirrored surfaces, a hassle that will be magnified in a child’s environment. If you already detest cleaning your bathroom mirrors, adding more reflective surfaces will only add to your chore list.

If you should decide to purchase mirrored closet doors, they can fit most any opening. They come in the form of sliding doors, hinged doors, bi-fold and even tri-fold designs. Sliding doors and folding doors will require track installation in the door frame and on the floor if you're installing new doors rather than replacing old ones, so keep the installation process in mind when making your purchase.

You might also consider if continuity is important to you. If you want all the bedrooms in your home to have identical fixtures, hardware, and doors, be sure that mirrored closet doors will work in all rooms before you install them in one. Keep in mind that you can make exceptions to the rule of continuity since bedrooms are clearly defined as separate spaces. The same wall-to-wall carpeting throughout all rooms can achieve the same purpose whether the closet doors match or not.
