What Should I Consider When Buying a Riding Lawn Mower?

Riding lawn mowers have made a huge difference in the time it takes to maintain lawns. However, when a consumer chooses to buy a riding lawn mower, he or she is confronted with many different options that may make the task somewhat intimidating. If you are planning on purchasing a riding lawn mower in the near future, here are some points to keep in mind.

One of the first tasks involved with choosing the right mower has to do with understanding what you need in the way of features. If your yard is smaller, then you will do well to go with a model that has a smaller deck size. While a larger deck also means a wider cutting area, it may be harder to maneuver the riding lawn mower into some of the tight spots around your yard.

For example, a riding lawn mower with a smaller deck size will fit more easily in between trees or allow you to mow the grass in between any decorative islands you may have placed in the landscaping. The more area you can mow with the riding mower, the less detail work you will have to do with a push mower. Even with the more narrow cut, the smaller deck size will end up saving you time and effort.

Not everyone is aware that you can purchase an electric riding lawn mower with the same ease as buying a gasoline-powered mower. Both options have their advantages. Electric units tend to make less noise. However, some people claim that gasoline powered mowers provide a better cut, even if a comparable electric mower provides the same horsepower. Also keep in mind that if you have a large area to mow, the electric model may require more frequent charging while a gas mower may or may not require a second fill of the gas tank.

Depending on the size of your budget, looking at used riding lawn mowers may be a smart move. When maintained properly, a used mower will provide many years of service and probably cost at least half of a new model. If you are not familiar with mowers, it would be a good idea to take someone along who is more knowledgeable if you decide to investigate any used riding lawn mower. This will make it easier to determine the general condition of the mower and also have some idea if the asking price is within reason.

For new mowers, always take a good look at the warranty. Ideally, you want as much protection as possible with the purchase. If you can find a model you like and also obtain some protection in the event of brake failure or problems with the gear shifts, that is what you want to do. Making sure the warranty is as comprehensive as possible could save you a substantial amount of money the first year or so you own the mower.

Buying a riding lawn mower is all about knowing what you need, how much you can spend, and what type of protection you can obtain against breakdowns and system malfunctions. Take your time and look at a variety of models that are within your price range and have the features that will make lawn care easier for you. Evaluating all your options will increase your chances of securing a mower that you will be happy with for many years.
