What Is Website Consulting?

Website consulting is a term used to describe the broad range of services a web consultant provides a website owner. Such services range from the aesthetic, including consultation on the visual appeal of a website, to the functional, including the user-friendliness of a website. From blogs to e-commerce websites, most sites can benefit from website consulting. Due to the abundance of website consultants available, a website owner should first look for consultants who specialize in his specific needs. He can then read testimonials, look at sample projects, and compare prices to find the web consultant best suited for his needs.

Nearly every type of website can benefit from website consulting. Traditional static websites, dynamic blogs or online journals, and e-commerce websites or site sections can all be improved by an experienced website consultant. On the whole, once a web consultant evaluates the type of website the client presents, he’ll initiate services to respond to three types of issues. These include how a website looks, how a website functions, and how the Internet responds to a website. Some web consultants specialize in all three areas, and others offer only one or two types of services.

Thus, a website consultant might assess the aesthetic qualities of a website, such as its visual appeal and whether its overall appearance corresponds with the message the company is trying to convey. Then, she could evaluate and improve the website’s functionality, including how easy it is for visitors to use and whether its options are organized in a manner that makes sense. Finally, the web consultant may improve the site’s search engine optimization (SEO) and boost its position in search rankings.

Some web consultants offer services beyond a customer’s website. For example, a web consulting business might help with e-mail marketing campaigns and other advertising ventures. Since most website owners want to attract visitors, whether to sell a product or service or to draw attention to a particular issue, it makes sense for web consultants to broaden their services to include marketing and advertising.

Before choosing website consulting services, a site owner should determine his exact needs. If he doesn’t have a website yet, he might choose a company that provides designing and consulting services. If he does have a website but it doesn’t look or isn’t performing how he wants it to, then he’ll want a company that focuses on improving the appearance and function of websites. Many website consulting companies and freelancers provide testimonials from past clients as well as samples of past websites they’ve worked on. In addition to looking at these, owners should compare prices before choosing a provider.

In addition to the employees who manage our websites at work, we have outside consultants who regularly give us feedback on what we can do to encourage more traffic to view the site and take advantage of the services we offer.

I found it interesting that the article says most websites can benefit from consultants. I have been going under the assumption that hiring a website consultant to critique a website is often a waste of time and money. I'm going to have to rethink my point of view.

Be cautious when you seek out a website consultant. There are many companies and individuals out there claiming to be experts in website consulting. It is easy enough for these companies and individuals to set up professional looking websites with testimonials and claims of experience.

Be sure that anything you read on a website can be verified, and if it cannot, look for another website consultant.
