What is the Relationship Between Drugs and Alcohol and Homicide?

A 2010 study showed that over 50% of homicide offenders were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In over 25% of the cases, more than one substance was detected. Almost 40% of offenders were under the influence of alcohol, and the most common drugs used when committing homicides were cannabis and opiates.

  • The country with the highest per capita murder rate is Colombia, followed closely by South Africa. The country with the lowest per capita murder rate is Qatar.

  • In 2006, homicide was the second leading cause of infant mortality in the US.

  • In the 2000s, the leading cause of workplace deaths in restaurants and hotels was homicide, with 80% of deaths resulting from homicides.
