What Is the Rainiest US City?

The rainiest city in the 48 contiguous United States is Mobile, Alabama, which gets an average of 67 inches (about 1,700 mm) of rain per year and averages about 59 rainy days a year. The place in the U.S. that gets the most rainfall is Mt. Waialeale in Hawaii, which gets about 460 inches (about 11,680 mm) of rain per year.

The nine rainiest U.S. cities after Mobile are Pensacola, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; West Palm Beach, Florida; Lafayette, Louisiana; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Miami, Florida; Port Arthur, Texas; Tallahassee, Florida; and Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Mawsynram, a village in Northeastern India, is also considered one of the wettest places in the world and regularly receives more than 467 inches (about 11,870 mm) of rain per year. In 1985, Mawsynram received a record-breaking 1,000 inches (26,000 mm) of rainfall.

  • Though 24th in terms of overall raininess, Olympia, Washington, did have the highest average number of rainy days in a year of any U.S. city for three decades, with 63 rainy days out of the year.
