What Is the Most Remote Airport?

The world's most remote airport is Mataveri International Airport, which is on Easter Island, also called Rapa Nui by its native people. The closest airport to Mataveri International is the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago, Chile, which is more than 2,300 miles (about 3,700 km) away. Only one airline, the Chilean LAN Airlines, flies in and out of Mataveri, taking travelers between Easter Island and Peru, Chile or Tahiti.

More about airports:

  • Many airports are great distances from city centers. For example, Munich West airport is 70 miles (112.6 km) outside central Munich.

  • Mataveri International Airport has one runway and is used for both military and commercial flights.

  • Many tourists visit Easter Island to view the Moai, large statues of the human form that were carved during the 13th to 16th centuries.
