You’ve got to get an Air Choice! It does a fantastic job of purifying the air throughout my entire 500 sq. ft apartment and it provides relief from my allergies. It's incredibly easy to use, doesn't take up much space, looks nice, and is very quiet! You just plug it in, turn it on, and it starts to work immediately. I love that it has a built-in sensor that's constantly testing the air quality, and there’s a little ring that changes color to tell you whether the air is unhealthy, moderate, or perfect. I usually keep my Air Choice set on “Auto” and it takes care of everything. And it’s so quiet that I keep it on while I’m asleep.

I always turn the Air Choice on as soon as I get home after work, and it usually lights up green, which means there’s some dust or pet dander around. It's really satisfying to see that ten minutes later, the light is blue, so I know the air quality has improved. You'll realize just how hard this air purifier is working when you change the filter and see how much dust and other particles it's removed from the air. It’s such a relief to know that my family isn’t breathing that stuff in.

@Annie Cox, how often do you have to change the filter?

We usually replace ours every few months, but it depends on how dirty the air is!

We recently got an Air Choice at work, and everyone is talking about how much better the air quality is. I work in an open-plan office and I've noticed that it seems less dusty and there are fewer smells around, especially near the communal microwave. The HEPA filter also captures mold and germs, which makes me feel better about the cleanliness of my work environment.

I bought an Air Choice because one of my roommates is a smoker. Although he doesn't smoke in the house, the smell of cigarettes sometimes comes in through the window and is always on his clothes. The Air Choice has made a huge difference with the smoking odor, and it's also helped tackle some of the weird cooking smells that happen when three people share a kitchen!

The LEVOIT Core 300 air purifier sounds like a pretty good match for what you’re looking for. Soon after plugging mine in, I noticed how much cleaner and fresher the air was, and how efficiently it prevents dust... from accumulating. Even when I have it on the highest setting to deal with cooking smells, it’s still pretty quiet. The only downside is that it has a pretty strong plastic smell that’s never gone away. Read more

@Britt Janssen, is the LEVOIT portable?

It’s fairly compact, although I wish it had a handle so I could move it from room to room more easily. I usually take it to my bedroom to make sure that I get a good night's sleep without sneezing or congestion.

I think the Germ Guardian air purifier is a good choice, although it’s a bit too loud to have running when you’re trying to sleep. I bought one to help with my boyfriend’s pet allergies. I was shocked when I eventually changed the filter... and saw how much dust and dander it had trapped. My boyfriend hasn’t exactly started cuddling with my cat, but he’s sniffling a lot less, so that’s a big win! Read more

In my experience, the Germ Guardian is fine for removing dust and odors, but the UV-C light that’s supposed to kill mold and germs stopped working after a few months.

A friend of mine recently got one of these, and it’s helped to remove the "doggy smell" that I used to notice every time I went over to her condo. It seems like it’s designed for fairly small rooms, though.

If you don’t mind a somewhat bulky air purifier, you could try the Whirlpool Whispure. I'm sensitive to dust, mold, pollen, and pet dander, and the Whirlpool has helped me to breathe more freely. My allergies... usually don’t flair up anymore when my mom brings her dog with her when she comes to visit. Read more

I have pretty bad seasonal allergies, but last spring when I was at home with the Whirlpool on, they were much more manageable. My only complaint is that after a few months it started to make a funny noise, so now I avoid using the “High” setting.

The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool is probably a bit excessive if you’re just looking for an air purifier, but it’s a stylish and cool device, especially if you’re the kind of person who enjoys looking at numbers ... and graphs about air quality. It does a good job of eliminating pollutants and particles from a medium-sized room and it’s extremely quiet. The Dyson is enabled with Wi-Fi and Alexa, so you can play around with the controls and settings on your phone. Read more

I’ve gone through a lot of different air purifiers, and I’ve never been fully satisfied with any of them, so I finally bit the bullet and bought a Dyson. I’m not one for scientific jargon, but the Dyson does all sorts of complicated functions relating ... to particulate matter and volatile compounds. The high-tech sensors detect and eliminate pollutants, and it oscillates and projects purified hot or cool air around the room. It’s a good space heater, but don’t expect it to also be an air conditioner.Read more

The Germ Guardian is a nice change from big, bulky, expensive air purifiers. It’s reasonably priced and cleans the air in my kitchen. I’m not sure how well it would work in a larger room, but I like that it’s so compact. The best thing about it is that there’s no nasty filter to change, just a UV-C light bulb ... to kill germs. Unfortunately, I had to replace the bulb after about a month, but other than that it’s great. Read more

Just want to point out that unlike most air purifiers, this one won’t make your electric bill skyrocket! Admittedly it’s only 7” high, but it works well in my home office. I’ve had it for almost a year and I haven’t had to replace the bulb yet.

I first tried the Germ Guardian pluggable air purifier in our kitchen, but it didn't do anything to help with cooking fumes. Now I’ve moved it to the bathroom, and it seems to function better in a smaller space. ... I think it would be too noisy for a bedroom, though ... It sounds like a really loud computer fan.
