Sage aromatherapy oil, also referred to as Clary sage, is a type of essential oil distilled from the leaves of the Clary sage plant. It is used for aromatherapy purposes, which are intended to help boost the mood as well as provide relaxation, among other benefits. Sage aromatherapy oil may be applied to the wrists as a perfume, or used in a bath for even more relaxation.

Sage aromatherapy oil has been used for centuries for its numerous benefits. It has a spicy and fresh fragrance that is slightly floral. Primarily, sage aromatherapy oil is used to alleviate depression and anxiety, simply by breathing in the aromatherapy oil. It has also been used to help with menstruation problems, and may be able to balance hormones as well as to relieve pain from menstrual cramps, in addition to preventing hot flashes due to menopause or peri-menopause.

In addition to these benefits, sage aromatherapy oil is often used for its relaxing, sedative properties. It may be used to treat insomnia, or to simply help one relax enough to sleep. A massage with sage aromatherapy oil may also be used for relaxation, and may help aid in digestion as well. Finally, some people use small amounts of sage oil as a calming skin treatment and a stimulating scalp treatment.

Sage oil is sometimes combined with other essential oils such as tea tree oil, peppermint oil, chamomile, or even vanilla, among others. These may all offer different benefits to the body, and it is important to read up on the benefits and any potential risks ahead of time. Professionals recommend that pregnant women avoid the use of sage oil. In addition, overuse of sage oil has the potential to raise the blood pressure and counteract the positive relaxation affects, so keep that in mind as well, and stop using the oil within a reasonable time, or when one feels one has had enough.

There are a few different ways to use aromatherapy oil. First, and most importantly, do not ingest it. All of the benefits come from inhaling the scent or applying the oil to the skin. Some people just apply it to the wrists, while others also apply the oil to the temples, the neck, and the bottoms of the feet. A few drops may be sprinkled in a bathtub, or applied to the body in a massage. There are many different aromatherapy oils available to benefit the body and mind; sage is only one option.
