What is Process-Based Management?

Process-based management is a leadership or management approach that is seeks to define the policies that govern the operation of the organization, and develop procedures that most efficiently give those policies form and function. When functioning properly, this approach to process management makes it possible to structure the day to day operation so that the mission, goals, and values of the company are always at the center of what is and is not done in the workplace. As with many approaches to managerial efficiency, process-based management does not provide an ultimate solution that never changes, but instead provides the framework in which managers can refine the operation when and as needed while still providing continuity for everyone involved with the production process.

While there are various approaches to process-based management, many use the company’s vision as the starting point for developing the essentials of the management strategy. By making the vision of the company clear to everyone involved in the management process, it becomes much easier to look at various strategies for organizing departments, creating lines of communication, and establishing a working environment where all segments of the company work for the same end. As each possible process or procedure is considered, managers can decide if that approach is in harmony with the vision or if it in some way inhibits the company from realizing that vision.

Along with the vision, process-based management also considers the establishment and eventual realization of specific goals. Both long-term and short-term goals are included in this process. Assuming that the company’s goals are in harmony with the vision of the business, the goals can serve as benchmarks of how well the company is holding to its vision. If the internal procedures that are in place make it possible to move toward the fulfillment of these goals and are in line with the company vision, then the management team is practicing a process-based management approach that is in the best interests of the company.

It is important to note that while the vision of a company is less subject to change, goals and the procedures used to achieve them may change from time to time. Factors such as shifts in consumer demands, changes in the general economy, and the necessity of developing new or improved product lines will have some impact on how managers function within their respective areas of responsibility. For this reason, the basics of process-based management always call for managers to evaluate current procedures in light of new developments, and take steps to adjust the structure and function of the business so it can continue to operate at the highest rate of efficiency as possible.
