The substance known in the scientific world as phosphoric acid is known in the world of homeopathic medicine as phosphoricum acidum. This man-manipulated mineral is used in small doses as a home herbal remedy to treat emotional ailments resulting from stress and exhaustion, such as apathy, listlessness, grief, and others. It is used for certain physical ailments as well, and is an important ingredient in various manufacturing industries.

Phosphoricum acidum is extracted from phosphorous. In nature, phosphorous is found as apatite, a crystal-like substance found in certain types of rocks. When sulfuric acid and calcium phosphate are combined, phosphoric acid is produced.

This substance is most popularly used in homeopathic medicine. Homeopathy, which garners worldwide popularity, is defined by the phrase "like cures like." In other words, a treatment should be similar to the ailment, or to substances which may aggravate the symptoms in large doses. This concept is similar to that which is manipulated in influenza vaccinations in Western medicine in which a small amount of the influenza virus is injected into the body to build resistance in the immune system. Most homeopathic cures require small, diluted doses, and only one remedy is meant to be used at a time for various ailments.

Of the many ailments phosphoricum acidum is meant to cure in homeopathic medicine, many result from stress. Mental and physical exhaustion, apathy, grief, insomnia coupled with fatigue, lethargy, and listlessness are all treated with phosphoric acid. It is believed that the initial tell-tale symptoms of these ailments include appetite loss, a thirst for sweet or fruity tasting beverages, difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, and cold sweats. In large doses, however, this substance would be likely to aggravate such ailments and symptoms.

Experts in homeopathic medicine claim that the best candidates for phosphoricum acidum treatment are people with overall calm and gentle personalities, who may be experiencing grief or trauma which they have a profound difficulty properly dealing with. The treatment should not, however, be viewed as a complete cure. It is recommended that a phosphoricum acidum regimen is accompanied by gentle exercise, plenty of rest, and physical warmth.

Phosphoric acid has several uses outside of the realm of homeopathy as well. In the past, it has been used as a digestive stimulant. It may help reduce elevated calcium levels in potential cancer patients, fight against hair loss and diabetes, prevent digestive tract-related dehydration, and provide relief in children suffering from growing pains. Additionally, phosphoric acid is an ingredient used in sugar refining, various medicines, detergents, fertilizers, and rust removal products.

Over a year ago I started having severe lower back pain, during my visit to the doctor I was surprised to know that stress was the major cause for back pain! So the doctor gave me phosphoricum acidum. I've been taking it for four months now but the back pain is not going away. I do stress a lot and I didn't really think that the medicine reliefs mental stress and not physical pain.

I actually didn't bother searching "phosphoricum acidum" until today and I've always believed that it's a remedy for lower back pain!

I was such a happy person some years ago. After my arm got broken, I started handling my dad's business. Since then, I have been feeling stressed and depressed. The doctor suggested this medicine to me. I feel much better after having a small dosage of it. There are not many articles on this medicine on the net. I wonder why?

I think phosphoricum acidum homeopathy treatment is a good remedy for people who have just broken up with their boyfriend or girlfriend!

In the US, homeopathic remedies aren't as popular, but it's very common in India, my home country. In my family, when we get sick, we go directly to the homeopathic doctor for treatment.

I was given phosphoricum acidum when I was a child because I grew really fast. I was taller than everybody else in my class and my joints used to hurt so bad from growing. I remember the doctor telling me that this is a remedy for "really tall girls." Phosphoricum acidum doesn't affect growth obviously, but it did help a lot back then with my joint pains.

I also had a friend in college who was taking this remedy because she broke up with her boyfriend and her family was arranging her marriage to someone else. Time is definitely the best medicine for such things. But I guess phosphoricum acidum helps to make sure that one doesn't remain in grief for longer than necessary.

@anamur-- Yes I believe a phosphoricum acidum treatment will be beneficial for your husband. It's really good when people are grieving. I think that's what your husband might be experiencing. Losing a job can be very traumatic to someone who loves their work.

When grief, weakness, depression and overexertion is involved, phosphoricum acidum, calcarea phos or natrum muriaticum is usually prescribed.

The best thing to do would be to take your husband to a homeopathic practitioner, let him examine him and discuss with him his symptoms and emotions. The doctor will decide what the best treatment is and how much of it he needs to take.

My husband lost his job six months ago and hasn't been able to find a new one. He has almost all of the symptoms mentioned here. He's just always in a bad mood and wants to be left alone. I know he wants to start working again but after several bad interviews, he doesn't even try anymore. When I talk to him, I feel like he doesn't even listen to me.

Do you think phosphoricum acidum would help him?

I tried to take him to the doctor but he refuses to go. He's pretty sure that our family doctor is going to put him on anti-depressives and he doesn't want to take them.

I want to help him feel better and be his old self again. And I think he might be more open to trying phosphoric acid, since it's natural and not really a drug.
