Peony root is a dried herbal remedy that comes from the Common Peony flower. Paeonia lactiflora, as it is scientifically known, has been used for thousands of years to treat pain, nervous conditions, and many other issues. The supplements are native to Asia.

Flower roots are typically three to four years old before being harvested and dried for use. They are then prepared into capsules for medicinal use. Tinctures, teas, and powdered root can also be used.

Supplements made from peony root have been used to treat a variety of ailments. They are especially popular in Chinese medicine. The most common use of peony root is as a sedative. Another popular use of the herbal treatment is for treating pain, such as headaches, stomachaches, and bladder infections.

Liver complications are said to be healed by peony root. People with jaundice and liver disease have used it to treat their health conditions. Blood disorders may also be healed by the remedy. It has been mixed with cinammon in order to help clear up respiratory distress. Those who use it believe that it can help purify the blood, as well as rid the body of congealed blood.

One common way of using this remedy is to combine it with other herbs to treat specific conditions. Some practitioners make treatments with peony, dong quai, and licorice for dizziness and other issues. The herb is also said to help increase general health and longevity, providing anti-aging benefits.

Women sometimes use this formula as a treatment for monthly menstrual issues. The herb may help relieve cramping and other discomforts associated with the menstrual cycle. Women have traditionally used the herb as a beauty enhancement as well. Menopausal symptoms, such as night sweats, may be treated with peony. Skin problems, such as boils, are said to be remedied with the treatment.

In traditional hoodoo folk magic, peony root has a rich history of folklore. Practitioners claim that peony herbs can help ward off misfortune and break negative curses or jinxes. The root is also said to help attract good luck. Some hoodoo believers use peony root to help maintain or increase good health.

Prior to using peony root for a health supplement, a medical practitioner should be consulted. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or nursing should not use this herbal remedy. People with serious conditions, such as cancer and AIDS, should also avoid the supplement, as well as anyone with chronic diarrhea.
