Olive leaf extract is a natural remedy derived from olive trees. It is extracted from fresh olive tree leaves and used in supplements for the general maintenance of good health. It is also used in alternative health treatments. Olive leaves have been used for medicinal treatments as far back as ancient times.

There are many health benefits attributed to olive leaf extract. It’s said to fight colds, the flu, and many other illnesses that are viral in nature. In fact, it may even help individuals who are fighting such serious illnesses as acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a potentially fatal immune disorder, and Epstein-Barr syndrome, a viral condition marked by infectious mononucleosis. No one is 100% sure just how effective olive leaf extract is for fighting these and other conditions, but researchers have produced some promising evidence so far.

Besides fighting viruses, this extract may be helpful for dealing with a full range of illnesses and conditions. For example, it may be helpful for those struggling with asthma and allergies. It may also prove effective for use by people who have fungal infections, such as yeast infections or those involving the nails. In fact, some research has shown that olive leaf extract may even prove helpful for people with chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. It may even help to lower cholesterol levels.

An individual may also use olive leaf extract to treat inflammation in mild conditions. For example, it may be used to treat gout, which is a condition marked by painful inflammation of the joints. This natural remedy also has properties helpful for those who are infected with parasites; it helps the body expel them from the digestive system.

Part of the reason olive leaf extract is so healthy is because it has a high antioxidant content. Antioxidants fight free radicals, which are molecules that harm the cells, contributing to premature signs of aging and many health conditions, including cancer. Oleuropein, a potent antioxidant, is the ingredient researchers believe offers most of the benefits people get from this extract. The extract also contains flavonoids, which are plant nutrients that offer antioxidant effects.

Many individuals use olive leaf extract in supplement form, consuming it in a pill or tablet. It may be used by itself or in combination with other natural remedies. Others make a tea out of it or use it in tincture form. A olive leaf tincture is an alcohol-based solution of olive leaf extract.

@ddljohn-- I understand where you're coming from and you may be right. But in my experience, olive tree leaf extract is very beneficial and strengthens the immune system.

I catch colds every winter and have several sinus infections throughout the year. Ever since I started taking olive leaf extract, I have been getting sick less and less. I don't think it's a coincidence.

My daughter also took it last week when she felt a cold coming on and she said her fatigue, body aches and sore throat disappeared in two days.

@burcinc-- I'm sure olive leaf extract has some benefits, but I personally don't think it can cure or treat any health condition. It's a supplement, like a vitamin, not a drug.

Most of us forget that the FDA doesn't regulate supplements. And I don't think many studies have been done on olive leaf extract to know its benefits and potential side effects.

I wouldn't expect any miracles from this supplement. In fact, I would avoid random olive leaf extract supplements and only buy from highly trustworthy brands. Who knows what they really put in those capsules.
