What is Microsuede? |
||||||||||
Microsuede, or microfiber, is a man made fiber. It is a knit blend that is made from very fine fibers that can sometimes be a hundred times finer than human hair. These delicate fibers are tightly woven together to create a dense fabric that has many of the came qualities as suede leather. However, it is generally much easier to clean than real suede and is usually much softer, as well. It is often used on furniture because it is very resistant to dirt and can be very durable. Microsuede is also used to make curtains, bedding, and shoes. It is perfect for curtains and bedding because it is wrinkle resistant. Its durability and resistance to staining also make it great for shoes and accessories. Microsuede is not colorfast, so if using it for any sewing or craft projects, be sure to wash the dye out before incorporating it into the project. It's easy to do this by running cold water over the fabric until all of the dye comes out. Many people are concerned about cleaning their microsuede. It is water resistant but rubbing water into the fabric will cause stains, so it is not advised to clean with simple soap and water. Small spills will bead on the surface, so they are easy to wipe away as long as you are sure to clean any spills immediately. Do not rub at the spill or you run the risk of staining the fabric. If water soaks into the fabric, it could potentially leave permanent marks. Therefore, it is best to dab the spill with a clean cloth. Microsuede is a polyester fabric. You can use most polyester cleaners on microsuede. Rubbing alcohol or clear alcohols, such as vodka, can be used. There are several cleaning products on the market that are made specifically for microsuede. Clean a small amount at a time and let the fabric dry completely between each attempt. Be sure to test any cleaner on a hidden area of the fabric to make sure it will not stain or cause damage. Your microsuede may become stiff after you clean it. Gently rub the fabric with a soft brush or use an old toothbrush. If a stain has caused an odor in the fabric, sprinkle the area with baking soda. The baking soda will help to soak up any odors that are trapped in the fabric. Microsuede is durable, stain resistant, and has many uses. It is a great alternative to suede because it is less expensive, softer, and more pliable. Microsuede is great for crafts and sewing and is much easier to clean than suede.
