What is Garlic Powder? |

Garlic powder is dried garlic that has been finely diced to create a powdered form. It should not be confused with garlic salt, which is a combination of garlic powder and table salt. You’ll find garlic powder in the spice section, and some cooks advocate using it in place of fresh garlic. Other cooks like the taste of garlic powder but find that the taste is different than fresh garlic, not as sharp and somewhat sweeter. If you’re out of fresh garlic, a powdered form can be a good substitute though the taste may be slightly different. You may find additional ingredients in powdered garlic, especially in those manufactured by larger spice companies, and those that are sold in generic form. Sometimes large companies add preservatives to keep the powder looking fresh, and you should examine these closely since it means the dried garlic may have been of inferior quality. If you’re concerned about additives, look for organically made garlic powder at local natural foods stores, and simply read the label on the back to find out what the powder contains. Some forms contain a humectant like calcium silicate to keep the powder from clumping. People may really enjoy using garlic powder because of its garlicky taste. If you’re on a low sodium diet, you can really benefit from this seasoning. Since it contains only a trace amount of natural sodium, you can use garlic powder liberally without being concerned about adding extra salt to your diet. It doesn’t always blend well if you want a smooth mix of ingredients. You might try garlic juice instead if you don’t want little tiny flakes of garlic in a dish. In addition to finding garlic powder on its own, you may find it in no-salt spice mixes or in grill seasonings. If you are trying to cut down on extra sodium, be certain to check that the mix contains powder and not garlic salt. As for its use in recipes, there are many. Use it in ground meats to make spicy hamburger patties, add it to scrambled eggs or omelets, sprinkle some in chili, or use it to top popcorn. You may be surprised at the vigorous taste imparted by simple garlic, even without added salt.
