What is Eyelash Conditioner?

T. Webster
T. Webster

Eyelash conditioner is a serum or gel applied along the eyelash line that is used to help lashes appear thicker, longer and healthier. The conditioners in the product work to help create the look of fuller, thicker and healthier lashes. This enhances the natural look of eyelashes without the help of mascara, false eyelashes or eyelash extensions.

The concept of an eyelash conditioner is much like a hair conditioner. Both use moisturizers and sometimes vitamins and minerals to encourage natural, healthy growth. Unlike mascara, eyelash conditioner does not offer an immediate transformation.

Eyelash conditioners work over time, because lashes grow and improve with nightly use of the eyelash conditioner. Generally, improvement is seen in two to four weeks. More dramatic improvements often are seen in two to three months. How fast results appear also can depend on the product.

Some eyelash conditioners do not claim to make the eyelashes actually longer. Rather, the lashes simply appear longer because they are smoother and healthier-looking. One of the key reasons that an eyelash conditioner is used is to help reverse the effects of thinning or breaking lashes. Eyelashes can fall out or become damaged by aging, health issues, poor nutrition or improper removal of mascara.

Some types of mascara contain conditioners that are designed to help eyelashes appear longer and more thick.

Eyelash conditioner products can be found at both department store beauty counters and discount stores. They are applied either alone or under mascara. Some mascara products are packaged with a separate eyelash conditioner. There are even mascaras with extra conditioners in them.

People who have sensitive skin can experience some irritation with an eyelash conditioner. This often can be alleviated by choosing a different product or using the product every other night instead of nightly. In the case of an extreme burning sensation or redness in the eye area, it is advisable to discontinue using the product and to contact a physician.

An advantage of a conditioner is that it can help cut down on the use of mascara or eyelash extensions. When used excessively, mascara and eyelash extensions can cause damage to the eyelashes. This can happen if the lashes become weighed down and break off. It also can occur if the eyes are rubbed too harshly when mascara is removed.

Just as the length and thickness of natural eyelashes can vary, so do the results obtained by using an eyelash conditioner. Some eyelash conditioners claim to promote actual eyelash growth, and others do not. There also are products geared specifically for eyelash growth, and some of these require a prescription from a doctor.

@turquoise-- Look for an eyelash conditioner with ingredients like vitamin E, aloe vera, almond oil or coconut oil. These ingredients have naturally moisturizing and nourishing properties.

I'm on a tight budget and actually just use pure almond oil as an eyelash conditioner. I take a little bit in between my fingers and gently rub them on my lashes daily. I also use almond oil as an eye makeup cleanser. Not only does it remove makeup but it nourishes my lashes in the process. My eyelashes actually look longer since I started using almond oil.

Almond oil was suggested to me by my roommate who is Indian. Indians have gorgeous lashes and they use natural oils like almond oil and coconut oil in their beauty regimen regularly. Even eyeliners in India, called kajal, are made with almond oil.

@turquoise-- There are good products out there that may help. I recommend reading product reviews to get an idea about different eyelash conditioners and their effectiveness.

Unfortunately, some products called "eyelash conditioner" do little more than separate and moisturize lashes as the article said. I think that eyelash conditioners with natural oils are more effective. These oils nourish the eyelashes and can actually encourage growth.

It's also important to be patient and stick to a product for a while. Don't expect any product to give you longer, thicker lashes overnight. It will take time so you do need to use the product consistently for at least several months.

I'm looking for an eyelash conditioner that can actually promote growth. I have very sparse and short eyelashes. I admire women who have thick beautiful lashes. Will an eyelash conditioner really help?
