Eyebrow threading is a depilation technique which originated in India, although it is also widely practiced in the Middle East. Salons in Western nations offered the service to Middle Eastern clients for decades before European and American women became interested and the popularity of eyebrow threading skyrocketed. The hair removal technique is not just for the eyebrows: threading can be used to remove other facial and body hair as well.
The technique is sometimes listed on salon menus as khite or fatlah, which are both Arabic words for threading. Eyebrow threading involves twisting a piece of thread, usually cotton, into a double strand. This double stranded thread is used to pick up a line of hair and then remove it, creating a very clean, precise hairline. Eyebrow threading is the technique preferred by Indian movie stars, who are often distinguished by their crisp brow lines.
Eyebrow threading can be used to eliminate a unibrow, raise the arch of the eyebrow, or add shape and definition to the brow. Because it removes hair by the follicle, it is a reasonably long lasting hair removal technique as well. Repeat visits after three to four weeks are standard. The technique is also not terribly expensive because it is easy to do quickly and does not require costly chemical ingredients. For women who would like to pursue a more natural beauty regimen, eyebrow threading is a good choice, since it does not use harmful products.
Eyebrow threading is a preferred hair removal technique for a number of reasons. Unlike tweezing or plucking, eyebrow threading removes one clean line of hair all at once, making it much quicker and easier to shape the brows. Eyebrow threading also will not harm the skin like wax and some depilatory creams can. If done correctly, the skin should not be red or irritated for more than a few minutes after the eyebrow threading session. Some aestheticians also find it easier to shape eyebrows using this technique than other methods available.
It is important to find an aesthetician who is experienced at eyebrow threading. Inexperience can result in uneven brows, hair breakage, ingrown hairs, or unnecessary pain. Most urban areas have a wide variety of spas offering eyebrow threading, and many online resources offer reviews of the service, including photographs of clients. If you are unsure about a spa, look for one which is frequented by Middle Eastern and Indian clients with perfect eyebrows.
dlaneh, Yes threading does remove the hair from the follicle, and it is different from waxing in that it gives a more clean, perfect shape to the brow than does waxing.
Hair does grow much slower when threading because it does not irritate the skin and putting toner over the area you threaded helps close the pores left open from the hair removal.

I have blonde, barely there eyebrows which look ridiculous to me. Is threading something that could help or should I just keep using my light brown eye pencil?

here's a tip for those who get "pimples" after threading! exfoliate the day before threading (remove dead skin, etc), wash face again prior to threading (keep pores clear from the day's oil and dirt), immediately wash and tone face after threading (clean pores again to close pores), exfoliate reguarly thereafter (but only 2 days after threading because the skin will be real delicate the first 2 days!)
threading sans pimples! :D

I have been getting my eyebrows done for about 2 years. I hate waxing because it takes the skin off and I think it is unsanitary. Some places to not use a new stick every time they dip. Eeww. But the place I go is great and fast. It hurts but no more than wax or plucking. They do a great job and its only $5. But I usually tip between $2 and $5 because the service is great.

Eyebrow threading is the best way to get you eyebrows done because when you wax them its taking part of your skin off every time.

Does the thread stay in her mouth the whole time? Aren't we talking about saliva going down the thread that's on your brow?

Heard about threading from a friend about a year ago. Got it done for the first time today. Not painful at all if you have some pain tolerance. Eyebrows look great. Some redness for a few minutes. Pretty good price (only $9). Definitely will do again.

Okay so I just moved to the Middle East and until today, had never heard of threading. (Guess because I grew up in rural areas of the U.S.) Anyhow, the after effects were nice and it is definitely a clean and crisp brow line. Unfortunately I was in so much pain, it took all I could do to let the lady do my right eyebrow. I don't know if she was just bad at it or if this is normal pain. I definitely feel like it will last longer than a waxing or plucking by the way the skin feels, but am not sure if I am brave enough to find out if the pain was a fluke.

I had mine done and it was wonderful. No pain and so fast. I hope that I can continue to get this done. There is a kiosk in both of our malls. $10.00 for a fast pain free way to look great.

I tried the eyebrow threading for the first time and it was the best decision ever. My eyebrows look thicker and fuller. It only cost me $10. It's just as painful as waxing but well worth it. I love my eyebrows.

I was always scared to try eyebrow threading, but I'm glad I did. First of all, it was only $10, which is much cheaper than waxing. The only painful part was on the bottom side of the arch, but even that was less painful than waxing. I didn't have any problems. There is very little redness and no irritation. If you're gonna go for the first time, have a friend go with you. I definitely plan on going back in 4 weeks!

I had my eyebrows done by threading today and never want to go back to the wax and the plucking.
It didn't hurt a tiny bit and I didn't even have any redness afterward, plus my eyebrows look great.

bframe~ I did it to myself at home. I learned it by watching some instructional lessons online. All you have to search for is "eyebrow threading". It takes a little bit of practice at first. You just have to make sure that you don't pinch your skin. Oh, and you might want to get some gloves so that the thread doesn't cut your fingers.

I had my first eyebrow threading today and I loved the results!! I used to get my eyebrows waxed and would also pluck them but they *do not* compare to eyebrow threading. It was not painful, in fact, I think waxing is worse. The area was red just a few minutes after the woman was done. My eyebrows look beautiful. I have never had them look this good. I would recommend this to any woman who wants beautiful, shaped eyebrows. Also, is is *very* inexpensive, costing me only $6.

I just started threading today. I tried it on myself. It is sooo much quicker than tweezing or waxing. It even got the short ones and the ones I didnt even know were there. Ya know the thin almost see-thru ones that only show up under certain light. Best thing about it is that there is virtually no preparation. And how much does a spool of string cost? $1-$2. The only complaint I have is that it kinda hurt my hands. Maybe I need some gloves or something.

What do you have to do to prepare for brow threading? Do you have to let your brow grow out first?

Just to let everybody know, you do not have to be from another country to be good at eyebrow threading! Some people can do it, some people can't, just like anything else!

I have a friends mother who is an experienced "threader"... she taught me and my best friend today and we have been practicing on each other for days lol... we started with areas like legs that we could not really mess up and now we do each others eye brows! We have gotten so good we can do one eye brow in about 2 minutes which is alot shorter than tweezers and gets all those "white" hairs... I love it! It is no more painful than tweezing, as far as waxing goes that is great for large areas.

Wow, I'm totally surprised by some of the comments saying it was painful. I'm wondering if they went to someone experienced. I have been doing threading for almost a year now. From day one, I was in love. It's so quick, painless, inexpensive and it is a cleaner look than waxing. I would never wax my facial hair again!

Hey Gals, I had this fabulous experience and can’t wait to share it with you. I saw this write-up about eyebrow threading in 2 articles in S Section of the Sun Herald in May and June this year and decided to give it a try at the parlour they recommended. I walked into the establishment a sceptic and left as a convert. The girls there were extremely professional and boy, I’m never going back to waxing to remove facial hair!

i have been threading my eye brows for 8 years im 23 now i am a hair dresser and i also thread eye brows and do with the plucker and waxing i think that eye brow threading is better then waxing because u can get the shape you want when doing with the thread but with waxing it's pretty hard to get the shape you want and they grow back more bushy with threading you can thread them even if they are small little hairs but with waxing you would have to wait until they are long and no one want to have bushy long eye brows why wait do it when there small with threading trust me its way better but god blessed me with very nice arched eye brows and thick black ones i can shape them very well and i get so many comments asking me where do u do ur eye brows so why wait go try it....

OMG. I have tried threading a few different times and it was the most horrible experience in my life. My eye brows bled and bruised, I had white bumps all over the eye brow area. Sorry, going back to waxing any day!!!!

I used to wax my brows and was introduced to threading by a friend who asked the local "threader" for lack of a better word to our womens' group. My eyebrows are fairly thick but I'm blessed with a very nice arch so its a matter of just thinning my brows. It was a little painful, not really anymore painful than waxing. The results are a far cry better. This lady was really good too! She was able to give a few of my friends with thin wisps for eyebrows definition. I also appreciated that I didn't get those nasty red bumps that wax can give you, not to mention they use fresh thread for each customer as opposed to that nasty popsicle stick stewing in hot wax all day..one only knows the germs that are cooking in that hot pot! Try threading!

My Eyebrow threading Experience
The hairy truth about the depilatory process--- ripping body hair out from when it grows-
that is a constant battle against nature. But if you insist on attacking follicles in high-maintenance areas, such as your eyebrows, chin, Lips and temple area, you should know about the newest trend in hair removal: Threading, A Indian hair removal method that is actually centuries old.
Now you are wondering how it’s done? The threader Sangita (Indian Girl)rigs a stand of cotton thread through her fingers and teeth, creating a triangle with some wound thread on one side, for torsion. Using just the right amount of pressure and proper rhythm, then runs the string along the surface of the skin. The wound –up end acts as a spring, causing the triangle of thread to open and close, catching onto hairs and pulling them out from the root. It is a simple concept, but threading requires training to get it right.

I recently tried eyebrow threading and I am a complete wax convert!! The process was much cheaper for my eyebrow/upper lip, didn't have any waxes/creams/gels to have an allergic reaction to, and my skin wasn't even red afterward. I definitely recommend this to anyone!

Does eyebrow threading remove the hair from the follicle any differently than waxing? Does the hair grow back slower than waxing?
