What Is Dimethicone?

Silicon dioxide, commonly referred to as silicon or silica, is a naturally occurring element in the earth. Chemists have successfully combined silica with oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon. These chemical compounds, which may also include additional elements, are known as silicones. Not all silicones are identical: they differ depending on how the elements are mixed and fused together. Dimethicone is just one of the various polymers that are based on silicone.

Other polymers have been manufactured that are based on dimethicone. A polymer is a large molecule that is composed of units of smaller molecules that are repeated. This process forms somewhat of a molecular chain.

Dimethicone is widely used in many personal care products and cosmetics such as shampoos for head lice and conditioners that facilitate the combing of tangled hair. It is possible for a consumer to know if dimethicone or one of its polymers is present in a particular cosmetic by reviewing the list of ingredients. Names such as Amodimethicone, Stearoxy Dimethicone and Behenoxy Dimethicone appearing on labels reveal the use of polymers based on this manmade substance.

The use of dimethicone in personal care products is a direct result of scientific research that shows that it serves as an anti-foaming agent, skin protectant, and hair conditioner. A cream is sold over-the-counter as a moisturizing lotion. It is also available as a cream for babies, appearing under various names depending on the manufacturer.

This polymer has been reviewed and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It can be used in cosmetics advertised as skin emollients. Expectant and breast-feeding mothers, however, are advised to consult a physician before using the creams.

Some side effects have been reported from the use of such products. They include mild itching and stinging or burning sensations. Doctors recommend immediate discontinuation of the use of the creams and that one seeks medical attention if side effects become severe. A pharmacist can be another good resource for guidance in the use of these creams.

Allergic reactions such as hives, sudden respiratory problems, and swelling in any part of the mouth or face should be considered severe side effects. Users of dimethicone cream may be surprised to find that the product can actually worsen dryness, although it was formulated to moisturize. This is not necessarily a sign of ineffectiveness, but may be one of an allergic reaction that should not be ignored.

Dimethicone is also widely used in non-cosmetic products for its corrosion-inhibiting properties. It is less commonly known by the name Polydimethylsiloxane. More simply, it is known as silicone oil.
