Collagen peptide is a natural body protein produced inside the body. Collagen and elastin in the body are produced to prevent dermal layers of the skin from developing skin folds. After they are created, these substances create collagen peptide bundles, resulting in firm skin. When the bundles decrease, the appearance of wrinkles becomes more noticeable. Skin care companies have manufactured collagen creams, injections, and capsules designed to produce smoother skin for people of all ages. Creams containing these peptides typically are manufactured as fragrance-free, hypo-allergenic skin care products.

Often referred to as hydrolyzed collagen, collagen peptide is made from collagen through an enzymatic hydrolysis process. It is used as a cosmetic or medical collagen in various skin creams and treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and to moisturize skin. Forms of collagen also are created in pill form for oral intake. Supplements often are sold at healthcare and nutrition retail outlets. In some areas, medical facilities and cosmetic salons sell these products.

Collagen peptide also is a digestible protein and can be taken as an oral supplement. Studies have shown that it can provide benefits for sports performance, weight management, skin health and joint and bone health. Scientists claim that it is absorbed into the body six hours after ingestion.

Oral ingestion of collagen peptide is the most common, and it is more commonly used to treat dry and rough skin. The cosmetic collagen product is designed to increase the production of collagen and increase the density of collagen fibrils in the body. As a result, scientists have studied the effect of collagen peptide on joint health. In one study, after taking this supplement, reports of joint pain decreased. Patients taking the oral form reported minimal side effects, such as nausea.

Collagen peptide also is used as a protein to aid with weight management and nutrition-friendly diets. Hydrolyzed collagen contains amino acids and protein content to increase energy for active individuals or athletes. It also contains amino acids produced in creatine, glycine and arginine, all proven aids used to improve athletic performance and increase energy. In addition to pill and skin-care moisturizing forms, the protein is also manufactured in powder blends that can be put in food and beverages.

Also in answering your question P1, I do not think it will cure osteoarthritis, but I think if you take good quality collagen supplements, you will have improved mobility and significantly reduced pain, but you will need to take them for the rest of your life.

@nativecollagen: Studies have shown that a "collagen peptide bomb" complex made in Poland in eastern Europe is a great natural collagen supplement, or amino acid complex. I take these supplements for my hip pain and immediately I had had increased mobility with little to no pain or sudden pain shocks due to bone on bone. And a few brown spots are fading too, from my years in the Aussie sun!
