What is Cocktail Attire?

define

Cocktail attire is one of those confusing terms that seems to appear on invitations for the express purpose of sending you into a wardrobe frenzy. Something less than formal but more than business is required, but in the world of ever-changing and ever more casual fashions, you easily run a risk of being over or underdressed for the occasion. Follow these basic guidelines to slip through any event with style, but feel free to spice things up to make an impact.

For men, the confusion of cocktail attire is much more simple. A casual suit, or well-pressed pants and a crisp button down shirt and tie is sufficient for most occasions. If you are unsure of the level of formality and want to play it safe, bring a jacket with you and leave it in the car if you notice more casually-dressed fellows at the event. Little details can greatly affect the perception of how well you are dressed, so be sure to polish your shoes and considering adding a handsome set of cuff links.

Cocktail attire for women is where the headaches begin. Should you wear a dress, a skirt and top, a suit? If you’re going for a skirt or dress, what length should it be? And what about shoes and accessories? Grab a cup of herbal tea and take a breath; finding cocktail attire is actually easier than it first appears.

If you choose to wear a dress, think elegance and simplicity over flashy details. Typically, cocktail-wear is knee length, though if you are wearing a simple straight skirt, longer is acceptable. If you choose to wear a nice pair of trousers instead, pair them with a silky or sexy blouse. With pants or a skirt, be careful to avoid looking like you are going to a business meeting; remember, cocktails imply fun.

In terms of shoes, seasonally appropriate high heels or boots are your best bet. Unless they are going to be a major accent piece, keep the height and flashiness to a minimum, focusing instead on the elegance and grace of your outfit to help you look great. Sneakers and flip-flops are inappropriate for cocktail attire, but dressy sandals or pretty ballet flats can easily fit the style.

For accessories, again think simplistic. Choose one piece of jewelry that matches your outfit or will catch attention, but no more. A beautiful ring, watch or pair of earrings will grab as much notice as a handful of random jewels scattered across yourself.

Cocktail attire is often required for dinner or happy hour events, or nights that will include a broad range of activities, from dancing to award presentations. Try to work versatility into your outfit so you will be prepared for all occasions. Choose shoes and clothes you can walk and sit comfortably in; your body will thank you in the morning!

Thank you, wiseGEEK, so far this is the most informative article I have found -- although I am still unsure of what to wear. I do not go to parties generally, I dress modestly (so no skimpy dresses for me), and have limited money to buy anything not in my wardrobe. But, you have at least given me some ideas outside of the "cocktail dress with heels" (no, I don't wear heels, either). I wouldn't even go to this party, except it is a company Christmas party hosted by our company's President and his wife (who helped me to get my current job six months ago). Anyway, just wanted to thank you -- there isn't much info out there for people like me.
