Breakdown maintenance involves the repair or replacement of equipment and components after they have failed. This kind of management strategy can be contrasted with preventive and predictive maintenance, which are designed to avoid equipment failures. The breakdown maintenance approach is typically employed when failures are unlikely to result in workplace injuries or excessive downtime, though the costs associated with emergency repairs are often prohibitive. A policy of breakdown maintenance is sometimes instituted when a facility or business has scheduled to close or cease operations, especially if there are no plans to continue using the equipment afterward.

There are many different ways to approach the maintenance of facilities and equipment. Preventive and predictive maintenance are two methods designed to avoid catastrophic failures. Inspections are typically carried out on a regular basis in the case of preventive maintenance, while a predictive approach can allow for repairs to be scheduled based on data about prior failure rates. By performing regular checks or replacing components before they break, catastrophic failures can be avoided.

A policy of breakdown maintenance is sometimes instituted when a facility or business has been scheduled to close. This is often a calculated risk, since the decision assumes that the equipment will continue running long enough for the facility to be closed down. If there are plans to scrap the equipment at the end of the period, costly preventive maintenance can be seen as unnecessary.

@MrsPramm - And that's just talking about the fact that a breakdown can result in a lack of product. In any company where people are working with machines a breakdown can mean injuries and deaths, which, from a purely financial perspective, can be very costly indeed.

Of course, the moral standpoint alone should be enough to motivate companies away from a breakdown maintenance policy, but frankly, I think quite a few of them basically ignore that aspect of it.

@Fa5t3r - That's why most companies would think it was crazy to use a breakdown maintenance policy. Because even if maintenance costs are high, a breakdown can be even more costly.

Even if the product is trivial, a lot of companies run on such very tight margins they can't really afford to be out of commission for even a short while. It makes much more sense to work maintenance into the budget than to deal with the consequences of not doing this.

I was watching a documentary on the Lego factory the other and it recorded what happened when one of the machines making the bricks broke down for a few minutes. Everyone in the factory had preassigned roles for every moment of the breakdown, from the people trying to fix it, to the people who took the time to fit in extra training for new employees.

They said if it was broken down for a certain period, they would have to go on to further assignments, because the toys are so popular that even pausing the machines for a few hours can cause a shortage and disrupt the supply chain, not to mention losing lots of money.

The machines came back on, so the crisis was averted, but the way people acted like it was such a massive big deal really surprised me. I mean, I like Legos as much as the next person, but it's not that big a deal.
