What is Ballistic Nylon? |
||||||||
As a material developed for protection and abrasion resistance, ballistic nylon has a long history of use in a number of different applications over the years. Here is some background on the nature of ballistic nylon, how it came to be developed, and what we continue to use the fabric for today. Ballistic nylon made its first appearance during World War II. The idea was to develop and industrial strength nylon material that would provide additional protection for troops serving on combat areas. The task was taken on by the DuPont corporation, which tried several weaves and formulas before coming up with a durable nylon that could be used to create the flak jackets worn by a number of United States airmen beginning in 1942. The main purpose of these stronger jackets was to help deflect shrapnel and other types of flying debris that resulted from gunfire and artillery shell explosions within the immediate area. Given the intended purpose for the nylon product, the material was dubbed ballistic nylon, with emphasis given to the ability of the material to repel a number of materials. Unfortunately, ballistic nylon did not prove to be as resistant as had been hoped originally. The nylon was unable to do anything to protect the soldier from bullets fired from pistols or rounds of rifle fire. Later products, such as Kevlar®, proved to be much more successful when it came to developing bullet proof vests and similar clothing that would protect the entire body. Still, ballistic nylon was a durable material, and one that could be used for a number of other purposes. One of the first applications had to do with luggage. Ballistic nylon was found to be an ideal choice for luggage reinforcement on the interior of the suitcase and steamer trunk. In addition to the additional strength, the fabric was easier to clean than some of the other choices for lining in use at the time. Over the years, soft-sided luggage became more popular, and ballistic nylon proved to be perfect for the shell as well as the interior lining of these newer and lighter pieces of luggage. Today, everything from carry-on luggage to gym bags are often made of ballistic nylon. Luggage is not the only modern use for ballistic nylon. Many motorcycle jackets are made from the material today, as well as durable tool belts that are used by weekend warriors and professional construction workers alike. Even some sports benefit from the use of ballistic nylon. For instance, many kayaks today are framed with a skin of ballistic nylon that is treated for water resistance. The material has been shown to hold up very well, and is actually quite cost effective when the time comes to replace the skin. Ballistic nylon may not have hit the mark as far as its original purpose, but many people benefit daily from the use of this strong and long lasting material. Check around your home; chances are you have at least a few items made with ballistic nylon.
